I got mine this morning in Tokyo. It will complement nicely the 400mm f4.5 S and 400mm f2.8 S TC.
Congratulations.
I am still puzzled at the way some posters here appear to focus only on sharpness at 600mm as the only relevant KPI to assess this lens against.
In long zooms of this price class and the ones a bit below it, has been typical that the images are not quite sharp and the relatively moderate maximum aperture (f/6.3) also makes it more difficult to achieve quite the crystal clarity that traditional high-end long lenses (such as 600/4 or your 400/2.8) are known for.
Also many photographers who aspire to purchase this type of a lens probably are not getting close enough to the subjects to not have to crop, so they are likely to be frequently cropping too deep, and so every bit of sharpness helps in that case. Of course, shorter distance shots without cropping will have much better quality. But this requires patience and knowledge of the subjects, and spending a lot of time in the wild.
Second, and far more importantly, sharpness is only one of the relevant aspects to measure a lens. I continue to think that bokeh quality is far more important and this is an aspect where the Nikon Z 180-600mm clearly smokes competion by a large margin.
While I don't disagree the out-of-focus rendering is important but it's probably too early to make conclusions about that. The lens needs to be used for different subjects, in different surroundings, distances and lighting conditions before comprehensive assessments can be made. Even the best lenses sometimes produce less than desirable out-of-focus effects.
Let us know how you get on with the new lens. I'm interested to hear how the tripod collar works (if you shoot it with a tripod).
