I’m thinking of selling my 1Dx, 5DSr, and 6D mark ii and picking up an R5. I’ve always been happy with my collection but don’t want to be left behind. Yes or no and why. Thanks.

Personally, I think the R5 is a better camera than all of those. You get better AF than all of them, similar resolution to the 5DSR, and significantly better dynamic range.

I'd get at least two cameras, to replace three.

Like I said. I’ve been happy with the other camera and don’t want to regret going to the R5. What I’m concerned about is the issue with the R5 locking up.

There’s a reason “fear of missing out” has received a well-known acronym (FOMO). Unless you can say exactly what you would be missing out on, the chances are it’s needless consumption that will not make you happier in the long term.

Ask yourself these questions:

• Do I ever need two bodies at the same time, for example, working in a boat or on safari?

• Can I afford to just go out and buy another camera if the one I have fails and is too old to get repaired? If not, it makes sense to trade them in as they age, even though it probably costs more over time than running them until they die.

• Do I need a camera with a grip?

• How willing am I to accept the limitations of mirrorless all the time? (No cross sensors, slightly worse AF in low contrast situations, no optical viewfinder, battery life.)

I’m starting to lean that way but still undecided.

Only you can decide
If you go down that route I’d hold either the 5dsr or 6dii back as a 2nd body (share same battery)
But I wouldn’t be able to decide which as both have their strengths (and weaknesses) ….probably keep hold of the 6dii ??

I am just one data point, but I haven’t had a lockup on my R5 since 2021.

I plan to wait until the update to the R5 has been out for a year then go mirrorless.

Geez, don't think about it, just do it. Get rid of all three.

You will be a Happy Camper. Trust me.

Another vote to sell them all and pick up the R5 for a couple hundred bucks out of your pocket.

You're here because you're a camera gear nut like the rest of us. Getting new toys is always fun and brings us nuts much happiness.

And you can't take your $$ with you, so why not.

One more data point. I've had my R5 since day one and have had 5 lock-ups in 3 years. The last one was about a year ago I think. It's a non issue.

And the 1Dx, 5DSr, and 6D mark ii do not have silent shutter, nor can you see the actual exposure in the VF when taking your shots.

Lockups have been fixed by firmware updates. Haven’t had one in over a year with 2 R5’s. R5 replaced my 5D3 and my 5D4. Only thing I miss is the optical view but the EVF does show you the exposure. THAT is a game changer! Rent or borrow an R5. 5 minutes with one in the hand is better than 5 hours of reading about it on the web.

Last fall I transitioned to the R6II from the 1DXII and 1DX back-up. There are some differences and a few slight advantages for the 1DX, but in respect to overall performance, especially AF capability, the R6II is miles ahead. I also tested an R5 at the time and it was very close. In fact, for my typical uses, the R3, 5 and 6 models were all very similar in respect to AF capability.

But I was reluctant to dispose of the DSLRs, "just in case" I experienced something overwhelmingly negative with the R6II. A couple weeks ago I sold the DSLRs and a number of under-used EF lenses. I've generally been very happy with the R system and the new RF lenses I've acquired in place of the EF equivalents.

If you’re really happy, you wouldn’t wonder about getting the R5.

Why would you regret the R5? If you have doubts, rent one first.

Only had mine lock up early on. Never since.

I’ve owned all the cameras you have and the R5 beats them all.

You apparently live in Tigard. Have you ventured into Pro Photo Supply (Portland) or Focal Point (Dallas) and handled an R5? I wouldn't be surprised if they'd let you bring your own SD card in, shoot some photos around the store and take them home to look at. You could probably bring 1-2 of your current cameras along and make similar shots/settings to compare at home. First-hand experience is a good teacher I assume you've read at least some of the "I moved from xxx to R5" comments on this and other places, so you should/could already have a very good idea of whether you'd benefit from a change.

You don't say what your subjects are. If you shoot primarily night sky/astro, you may want to stick with your DSLRs. For most other things, and especially things involving live subjects (birds, concerts, events), you'll probably end up preferring the R5 (real silent shutter—not "reduced noise" shutter, faster frame rate, faster AF, better DR, better info display in the EVF, articulating screen, super video capabilities, 900+ page manual ).

I've had a pair of R5's for 1.5 years and no lockups under the last 3 firmware versions. Both lockups before that (one on each camera) were with the same brand of CFexpress card, and I don't use those anymore. I know quite a few people with R5's, and nobody with firmware 1.5 or newer has mentioned a lockup. So from a lockup perspective, you're probably fine (there's never an absolute guarantee).

I went from 5D4 + 5DsR + 7D2 to the R5's. Other than always needing to carry at least one spare (except for astro, where other approaches may be needed), I've been very happy with my move. I still have the 5D4, but use it only rarely and only on a special macro setup I made.

One unexpected problem I have with the R5 + subjects I shoot the most: now I'm having to learn video! I've had some great opportunities that got me to try video (nice storms, interesting bird behavior) and thus have new challenges that I'd not encountered in 20+ years of using DSLRs. Not a bad problem to have, though.

Really, though, if you don't know why you should make a change, then you probably don't need to make the change.

I didn't know people still shoot with 1DX. I just googled and discovered that you can still get $500 or more for it. Better to get rid of it now that it's still worth something than wait.

You may think you are happy now, but wait until you try R5. After switching, you will wonder why it took you so long.
