I'm looking at adding a fisheye for sports. Mostly football and hockey. Probably a lot of pregame stuff where I can get closer such as the running onto the field (for football).

It will not be used a lot but I think it will add something cool to my portfolio. I already have the 16-35 F4 Canon so getting a wide angle shot isn't an issue - it's mostly for the cool effect. I'm not much into the images where the frame is all captured in one circle - I'm more looking for something that goes edge to edge in the frame but has the fisheye distortion.

Considering I'm not going to use it a ton (but who knows...if I really like it and have fun with it I might use for other shots), for those that have used fisheye lenses, do you think that a cheaper option that is manual focus would be still very useable or do you think I should spend the extra $500-700 for a used Canon 8-15 fisheye?

I've owned the Canon 15mm FE and a Samyang 12(?) mm FE. The Samyang was a "dead" lens so it didn't report any EXIF data which I didn't like. The DOF on a FE is so deep, you can effectively focus at 1m and get everything in focus most of the time. Mirrorless makes manually focusing easier, but it's one more thing to think about in the heat of the moment. I've actually been thinking of getting a FE again and I'll probably go with the Canon. They're long out of production but you can still find them on eBay. Sigma made a similar lens to the Canon 15mm at a similar price. All three lenses I've mentioned have a 180 degree diagonal angle of view and cover the whole sensor on a full frame camera.

Thanks Mike. When you say go with the Canon, do you mean purchasing the 15mm again or going with something else? If I focus at 1m, are the items closer than that significantly out of focus? I doubt I'll be closer than 1m on the football field but just checking.

I own the TTArtisan 11mm and it's really quite a good lens. If you set it to f/5.6 and pre-focus it to between 1m and infinity on the barrel it is good for anything except stuff that's closer than 3 feet or so. If you're going to be closer to your subject than that, it might get a little tricky. Can always try to work out a good median value, but if your focus is going to change from moderate (4-5 feet and beyond and then changing to 1.5-2ft), you might be better off with an AF fisheye, but if that can work, for occasional use, then I think you'd be fine.

One note on the TTArtisan 11mm, do NOT go beyond f/8 on that lens. f/11 and especially f/16 suffer dramatic drops in sharpness due to diffraction. At f/5.6 and f/8, it's sharp corner to corner.

I'm leaning toward the Canon 15mm FE over the Sigma just because it's what I had before so it's a known quantity and there's zero chance of any compatibility issues. I'd have to do more research on the Sigma though. The Canon design dates back to the dawn of the EF mount in the late 80's and I believe Sigma's is much newer. If I recall, the Canon focused pretty quickly but noisily. Definitely no USM motor in there. More like a stepper motor from a 1980's floppy drive lol.

The Canon EF 15mm Fish Eye is inexpensive used, small, lightweight and its optics are reasonably good enough for what I use it for. Its low-tech AF may work well enough for what you need it for and if not than set it to manual. Its AF may be able to get the focus into the ball park due to its large depth of focus. If using the camera’s AF mode and manually selecting the focus point(s) is too cumbersome then try having the camera control AF point selection in one of its zone modes.

My 15 is one of my least used lenses however I occasionally like its fishy look for the fun of it. I haven't tried it out for sports action. Due to its small size and weight it rides around everywhere in my camera backpack just in case.

I use quite a bit the 8-15 mostly for Ice hockey Netcam and more rarely for some under the obstacle shoots for horse show jumping. A few times I do use it for showing the stadium too.
Tbh if I would not need it for the netcam I would never buy one.

I imagine that you are on a FF, if yes then a used Canon EF 15 2.8 probably is the best choice you can buy and resell it from the same if you don't like it.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

I decided to give the TTArtisan 11mm 2.8 lens a go.

The 15mm Canon was a little less than double the cost of the TTArtisan on ebay, and I could get the 8-15 for about $700 or so (not too shabby), but for something I'm not sure of how much I'll use, I think it's best to start off small.

Do you mind giving me some details regarding the netcam? It's something I'd love to do too.

I've had the Sigma 15mm f2.8 and now have the Canon EF15mm f2.8. The Canon is better. I also had a Rolkinon 14mm for a bit and hated it. As noted above, it isn't the quietest focuser, but given that I usually have it stuck on a remote that isn't much of an issue.

Another vote for the 15mm EF. The Sigma 15mm EX is good, but not as good as the Canon as it's AF is inferior and I think its imagery at wider apertures is not so snappy either (On 5DIV). AF is useful in a fisheye because although they have a huge depth of field, being within the depth of field does not mean details are necessarily sharp and since the 15mm covers such a wide range of angles and distances to the focal plane it is still best to focus accurately on the most important element of the scene to ensure the greatest impact. I love fisheyes. For some occasions nothing else works as well, as the shot above shows.

As mentioned above, I decided to get the TTArtisan 11mm and I just got it yesterday. Just fooling around with it. The manual focus for up close will be a bit of a challenge but that shouldn't be a problem for sports typically. The zebras help with it.

Just a quick one here at 2.8. It is fun shooting with this thing!

Edit - don't know how to scale the image down...man the dog looks big!!

I've used the Rokinon 8mm (for Canon EF) and have had success using that. I've attached a few pics from our church's car show and taken with the 5DIV and the Rokinon 8mm. Great for getting good pics of the car interior and engine. I've used that lens on the R6 - obviously takes the adapter and you have to manually focus and also set the aperture correctly for the light. Used it some for basketball, too, although what I'm sharing isn''t the best vantage point.

For the netcam I bought the older version of this one: hockeynetcam.com.

As I use it on the top professional league in Switzerland, I had to get it approved by the league (they inspected it and put a sticker) and I also need to proof that I have a professional insurance with coverage of at least 6M $.

Thanks for the info. I had a feeling that it would be hockeynetcam.com when I saw your pictures. Your photos are as good as I've ever seen from a netcam. Or anywhere else.

Just so I understand, you've indicated professional insurance of $6M. Is that 6M in US$ or similar? I've read other places that people who've done this had to prove that they had insurance for their own gear (after getting the design approved) and sign a waiver holding the facility etc harmless.
