MacRumors has a post about Geekbench 6 scores for Mac Pro (M2 Ultra) which should be the same as Mac Studio M2 Ultra:

https://www.macrumors.com/2023/06/13/mac-pro-m2-ultra-chip-benchmark-result/

2704 for single core
21453 multi-core

These scores are about 20% faster than my M1 Ultra Mac Studio. So just about as expected. Will see if there are optimizations in graphics and neural engine which give even a bigger boost to LRC processing.

Anyone willing to throw out your prefered specs?

Thinking upgraded CPU, 64 GB ram, 4 TB storage.

(or should I get the ultra?)

My M2 Ultra just arrived a few hours ago. I am running GeekBench 6.1, so it might not be 100% comparable, but I got 2814 Single Core and 21412 Multi-Core; 218866 for Metal with the 76-core GPU I have.

Early numbers on my LR benchmarking show improvements ranging from 7-8% for tasks like preview rendering, 17% for jpeg exports, and a much bigger 28% speed boost in the new AI-based denoise function.

Congratulations. Very envious. I suspect the AI stuff is where you will see the biggest improvements. LRC just updated today, so perhaps you might see even more of a boost. Let us know how things go with your workflow after using it for awhile.

I didn't see any improvements on my 2020 MacBook Air with the M1 but it seems my 2019 iMac (with 8GB VRAM) went from 45 seconds to 36.

I am still on a fully loaded Intel-based iMac Pro from 2018 and thus far it holds up splendidly for both photo and video processing. I plan to upgrade next year to the Mac Studio with (hopefully) the 3nm process M3 chip.

Will the M3 be another 20% bump or do you expect it be a more significant bump? What will be the benefits of waiting for M3 with 3nm?

Next year just happens to be the time when my upgrade cycle kicks in. If it coincides with the M3 availability that’s a bonus.

The general belief is that the M3 will see the introduction of hardware raytracing on the GPU, in addition to the TSMC 3nm manufacturing node. That should give a great boost in GPU performance, although mainly for gaming and 3D rendering, so not as much of a plus to us in the still photography world.

No doubt you'll see both CPU and GPU core counts go up again, as well, and that will help, as well as continued improvement on the neural engines for AI tasks. That should be a big plus.

Are these improvements from M1 Ultra -> M2 Ultra ?

Edit: please ignore, I found the response (yes) in your test thread (https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1812972) - thanks for all these detailed results !

Can you or anyone for that matter let me know how Lightroom runs with 2 4k displays? I’ve never been able to use 2 displays on my 2019 Mac Pro, as soon as I turn the second display Lightroom gets laggy as hell almost un useable. Turn the second display off and works smooth as butter again. Looking to upgrade but want to make sure this issue isn’t an issue anymore before I do.

It will depend on which M2 version you get and how much RAM. I have the M2 Ultra with 128GB of memory and I use to drive two 32" ProDisplay XDRs. That takes some serious GPU power and RAM since they're 6K displays. Even with only minimal previews rendered LR is very snappy browsing images; it takes a fraction of a second to render the high-resolution preview.

I'd personally suggest an Ultra over a Max for dual displays, but then again I tend to go for overkill.

That’s really good to know, I have one xdr and 2 other 4k displays one would be used for secondary Lightroom.

To clarify you have no lag on the slider adjustments in the develop module using 2 xdr displays

Zero lag making any adjustments in the develop module. I also keep a ton of stuff open, so I'll have Safari open with 10+ tabs, Photoshop, Lightroom, Mail, and 2-3 other applications.

Any chance you could share a video editing with both monitors. Getting ready to make a purchase just want to see it working.

Lightroom Classic was optimised for M2 to the extent that I tried a MacBook Air and all was pretty good. It did, however, falter, generating previews, with DXO PhotoLabs, so I went back to the MacBook Pro. Shame. I’d have been delighted if the 15” MacBook Air was the answer.

Yeah I have a M1 Max 14” and I have tried it too to run my two displays with Lightroom and still have the lag issues. Editing just on the laptop itself is a dream but I really want to get back to a dual screen setup. My trash can Mac Pro and Lightroom never had an issue working off of 2 4k monitor. So you can see why im hesitant to drop a bunch of money again without knowing for sure either the studio or new pro can drive 2 screens in Lightroom.

Strange, I'm running a M1 Max 14" (32Gb memory) with 2 LG 4K displays without issues.
