I don't see Apple expecting people who bought M1 versions of these machines to buy an M2 any more than they ever expected people to upgrade with every Intel processor bump. It's just the normal natural evolution of technology. I am buying one, but it's to replace a Mac Pro I bought in November 2019. The three M1 Studios I have will be in service for a similar 3-4 year window at my business.
As for those articles, I'd take them all with a grain of salt. Clearly they didn't suspend production of M2s, and if they did, it was to replace them with M3's that are apparently now being made. Across the entire industry PC sales plummeted in 2022 and early 2023 because there was a massive unprecedented surge in purchases in late 2020 through late 2021/early 2022 as many people switched to work from home during the pandemic. Apple's sales actually fell much less than the industry average.
Based on the boost my M2 Max MacBook Pro has over the M1 Max MBP I also have it's a nice gain but nothing huge. Certainly if the M1 is up to the task, there's no reason to upgrade. I suspect we'll see a bigger bump with the upcoming M3 which apparently will include more advanced capabilities in the GPU and will have moved to a newer process node that should yield more significant performance gains....Show more →
Back from April. But to your point, the internet has been wrong before:
"Apple’s worldwide computer shipments fell 40.5% year over year in the first quarter of 2023, amid a broader contraction in consumer demand, according to research firm IDC."
"It’s not entirely unexpected. Apple Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri said in February that Apple expected double-digit declines in Mac and iPad sales from the year-earlier period for the March quarter. Mac revenue fell 28.66% year over year during the December quarter. Apple CEO Tim Cook said at the time that the challenging macroeconomic environment affected iPhone, Mac and Apple Watch sales."

Apparently M1 was a watershed seller for Apple. Big shift in the industry and probably brought in a lot of new or returning Apple customers.
My interest is in Apple Silicon proliferation across HW and SW since that is where the majority of my personal and professional investment is. Even though we do have one 4090 behemoth as well.
I look forward to your benchmarks.
