With the M2 chip. Glad to see the Studio get a bump, contrary to rumours that had been circulating for weeks.

I bought my M1 Studio in mid May thanks to the "no refresh" rumors, but luckily have 5 days left on my return window

Getting an M2 instead, that was almost terrible!

Mac Mini M2 Pro (with 32gb RAM upgrade)

or

Mac Studio M2 Max (base)

The Mini is about $500 (or more) cheaper. I would just be using this for Lightroom. I'm currently on an Intel 7600k and LR runs so slow.

What kind of files (jpeg/raw/what megapixel) are you editing?

Wedding files, raw, various Sony's (A7, A7R). I'm using Smart Previews and doing more "AI" edits. My Intel machine really struggles with the AI stuff.

If you're going AI and going to use the "Enhance" type feature, just get the Studio. The performance gains are well worth the extra $500 IMO over the life of the machine.

As Scott said, get the Studio. It will be faster, more ports, better value all around.

The new MP was a giant letdown. My M1 Max Studios run circles around my 2019 Mac Pros in Lightroom. Don't get me wrong, those guys still do great for 3.5-year-old machines, but the Studio cost half as much and is so much snappier and performant in general use even if things like AI masking are similar overall.

I ordered up on M2 Ultra Studio today. No need for the max RAM as I never can saturate the 128GB on my current M1 Max Studio, so all I got was 128GB, but I did max out the GPU cores. The neural engine is supposedly much faster in the M2 vs. M1, so I can't wait for Apple and Adobe to sort out whatever the bug is that's keeping them from leveraging it in DeNoise.

Looking forward to seeing some numbers from the M2 Studio when you get the chance.

Funny that I thought at the time ( March 2022) I would buy the Apple M1 Studio Ultra to future proof that big computer spend--I guess "future" is now defined as about 15 months or less?

I am however curious to see how well the M2 Studio sells overall. Will consumers and test results find enough real-world performance bumps to upgrade from M1 Studio computers?

Apparently Apple M2 sales have not sold very well compared to M1 sales up to this point. Maybe the M2 in the Studio computer and the new 15" Air will turn things around. For me, I am sticking with my somewhat souped-up M1 Ultra ...at least for now. But I will be watching M2 Studio Ultra with interest.

Back in April:

"Falling Mac sales reportedly forced Apple to suspend M2 chip production"

https://www.macworld.com/article/1681021/m2-chip-production-halted-mac-sales.html

"Facing "plummeting" Mac sales amid a severe PC market downturn, Apple in January completely suspended production of its custom-designed M2 series processors that power new MacBook Pro and Mac mini models and the latest MacBook Air, according to The Elec."

You have a powerful machine that should provide stellar performance for at least the next 4 years.

I don't see Apple expecting people who bought M1 versions of these machines to buy an M2 any more than they ever expected people to upgrade with every Intel processor bump. It's just the normal natural evolution of technology. I am buying one, but it's to replace a Mac Pro I bought in November 2019. The three M1 Studios I have will be in service for a similar 3-4 year window at my business.

As for those articles, I'd take them all with a grain of salt. Clearly they didn't suspend production of M2s, and if they did, it was to replace them with M3's that are apparently now being made. Across the entire industry PC sales plummeted in 2022 and early 2023 because there was a massive unprecedented surge in purchases in late 2020 through late 2021/early 2022 as many people switched to work from home during the pandemic. Apple's sales actually fell much less than the industry average.

Based on the boost my M2 Max MacBook Pro has over the M1 Max MBP I also have it's a nice gain but nothing huge. Certainly if the M1 is up to the task, there's no reason to upgrade. I suspect we'll see a bigger bump with the upcoming M3 which apparently will include more advanced capabilities in the GPU and will have moved to a newer process node that should yield more significant performance gains.

I am happy with the performance capabilities of my purchase. Studio M1 Ultra + Studio Display.

Just curious, what are your thoughts about the level of M1 and now M2 compatibility with the software industry across the board. Are the major players taking full advantage of Apple Silicon at this point, particularly with regards to performance or still some work to do? I notice majority of the apps on the M1 are Kind = Universal, a few are Kind = Apple Silicon or iOS with remaining small percentage Kind = Other.

Back from April. But to your point, the internet has been wrong before:

"Apple’s worldwide computer shipments fell 40.5% year over year in the first quarter of 2023, amid a broader contraction in consumer demand, according to research firm IDC."

"It’s not entirely unexpected. Apple Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri said in February that Apple expected double-digit declines in Mac and iPad sales from the year-earlier period for the March quarter. Mac revenue fell 28.66% year over year during the December quarter. Apple CEO Tim Cook said at the time that the challenging macroeconomic environment affected iPhone, Mac and Apple Watch sales."

https://www.cnbc.com/2023/04/10/apples-mac-shipments-fall-more-than-40percent-worse-than-major-rivals-idc.html

Apparently M1 was a watershed seller for Apple. Big shift in the industry and probably brought in a lot of new or returning Apple customers.

My interest is in Apple Silicon proliferation across HW and SW since that is where the majority of my personal and professional investment is. Even though we do have one 4090 behemoth as well.

I look forward to your benchmarks.

Maybe people don't care anymore for 5% speed increase, so whoever have M1 Mac won't replace this with newer model. The same thing with iPhone 13 vs 14 vs 15 vs 16. Are there really big differences ? I don't think so

1 % thinner, 2 % lighter, 3% faster - I keep my M1 for a little longer - and this laptops models with 256 GB SSD is slap in a face

The M2 Max is 20% faster than the M1, a not totally insignificant jump for a single refresh.

It really depends on what you use. Virtually everything I use on a daily basis is native now and runs very well. The only thing we have to use PCs for is 3D rendering with KeyShot. They have an Apple Silicon native version but it's not optimized for Metal and the Apple GPUs so it is CPU-based rendering only, which is slow. For that reason we use a PC rendering box with Nvidia RTX cards (Keyshot scales well across multiple cards).

The CAD program used here is AS native but we rely on an overlay program that is PC only so the two CAD designers are forced to use Windows. It's a niche industry program so I don't ever see that changing anytime soon, either.

I am still on a fully loaded Intel-based iMac Pro from 2018 and thus far it holds up splendidly for both photo and video processing. I plan to upgrade next year to the Mac Studio with (hopefully) the 3nm process M3 chip.

Good point, and that's CPU only; the GPU is 30% faster and the neural engines are claimed to be 40% faster.

That said, how much this is realized depends on the software and the task. A lot of this is because of increased core counts, and not just faster clock speeds, etc. If the software or task won't scale across core counts then the benefits won't be realized.

What I am very patiently waiting for is the update/bug fix from Apple for the issue with the neural engines so Adobe can release the updated LR Denoise. According to them it significantly boosts performance, and since the ANE core count is identical in both the M1 and M2 generations, there should be a noticeable boost in DeNoise in both versions, but especially so with the M2 generation.
