Canon R7 Shutter sticking problem

I sent my R7 to Canon because of one problem I've been having with it. It came back with their assurances that it is well within specifications. The problem remains.

I have the <AF-ON> button set to Eye Detection AF. The <*> (asterisk) button is set to AF and Metering On.

Intermittently, the camera will continue to fire the shutter for several frames if I have my thumb on the <AF-ON> button while shooting and I have released the shutter button. This problem is not present when I hold the <*> button down while shooting.

The good thing is my follow-through has really improved since I don't know if the shutter will continue to fire or not.

Is there anyone out there having the same problem? If so, what might I do to cut down on this problem?

One thing I will try is to enable continuous autofocus now known as "Preview AF." If I can get my finger off the <AF-ON> button, maybe it will work better.

I did not notice such strange behaviour from my R7. My AF ON and * buttons are configured the other way around, subject detection on * button. No eye detection.

It seems no one else has had this particular problem. I did try enabling "Preview AF" and it was so disorienting that I quickly turned it off. It seems the problem is for me to deal with until the camera goes on to its next owner. After all, it is well within specifications and probably would not be a problem for anyone if the settings were returned to default.

I have the same issue and noticed on another forum that there are a few more. It's really frustrating, because my retailer does not think it's worth sending it it back to Canon, since they wouldn't probably be able to reproduce the problems, because it only occurs in very specific circumstances, for example when photographing rather fast moving objects and pressing the eye-focus button (in my case birds in flight).

I'm using an older EF lens (Canon EF 400/f5.6) in combination with an EF-ER adapter. Maybe the adapter is causing the problems? What are you using?

Does the shutter button feel sticky or does it respond quickly when you lift your finger?

My guess is Canon would have reset to factory settings. I’ve done that for other reasons. Complete reset of all the menu items on that page.

If you leave AF and Metering on the shutter does this still happen?

Off topic I can’t see how AF Preview would help but I love it. I’ve used since getting my R5 (different menu name) and it’s enabled on my R7 and R6II. I see no real difference between a white pre focus square compare to the blue focus square. If you lift your finger off the shutter button it kicks in and keeps focusing. I find it a valuable benefit.

I changed my official Canon R7 battery two weeks ago with an older Canon EOS 80D battery, which is the same type. The problem didn't occur anymore during the last photo sessions. So hopefully it was the battery and the problem is solved!

Not likely the battery would change conductivity or camera FW/software behavior. Maybe a bit a bit of salty sweat or grit leaked into the button contacts and your usage wore through it. I used to shoot on tropical beaches daily and hand sweat used to do a number on buttons and dials, especially the shutter button. Clean the switch contacts and all was well again. I had a friend whose mitts were so sweaty the inside of his camera looked like it had salt water damage (the finish on his cellphone and car steering wheeling were damaged from his acidic hand sweat).
