Has anybody tried this? How well did It work? Issues?

Just bought a T5 with Sigma 18-50. Looking now at options for down the road.

Haven't tried it but did some research before buying a second-hand Fuji 27mm f2.8 R WR.
From what I gather, the T.T.Artisans is about as sharp in the centre and perhaps a little worse at the edges at wider apertures. I haven't heard anyone say it is better than the Fuji except the price.

If you're the kind of person who doesn't fuss too much about whether it is best in class and want to save a few bucks it is probably fine. If you want to be sure you have the best lens in its class, then you may want to pick the Fuji. There are plenty of Fuji ones available second hand, which might be another option. I think the Fuji would hold its value better, particularly if you buy second-hand.

Given the lens you have is already f2.8, you might want to consider getting another faster fuji prime.

Thanks Geoff,

Edge softness wouldn't bother me to much, as I do make adjustments in my photos to "knock off" the "digital look" trying for a more analog appearance. Think listening to an LP Vinyl disk vs. an MP3/CD. The Sigma 18-50 looks [so far] that it will do all I want/need. But I can see having a smaller compact lens could be a handy thing to have occasionally. Time will tell, no rush to buy anything. Buy used? Indeed, I have had good luck with doing so, and saved a few dollars.

I have the TTartisan 27mm and in the past had the 2 generations of the Fujifilm 27mm. Don't have a X-T5 though (sadly).

Compared to the Fujinon, the TTartisan 27mm is slightly softer at f/2.8, but not that much. Also it's weirdly sharper in the corners than in the center when wide open.

The bokeh is a little worse than the Fujinon, 27mm @f/2.8 isn't particularly a bokeh monster lens anyway, but if you do lots of close-up shots it might matter. The coatings are a bit worse too, more prone to flare but not as bad as most chinese lenses. As an advantage, the TTartisans includes a hood in the box (the Fujinon doesn't).

In my experience, the AF is as fast as the Fujinon, but less noisy, doesn't feel as clunky.

In resume, for the price it's a very good lens, especially considering how over-priced the Fujinon 27mm is.

Thanks for the input and taking time to answer. Some limitations for sure, but $240 cheaper. Hmmmm have to think about this for a while. Interesting about the corner sharpness. I have read that it is fun to shoot [Fuji cameras] with old glass that has imperfections. This maybe a good way to get that look, with some more modern features [AF].

The bokeh is also a bit swirly, if it’s something you like it, contributes a bit for that distinct vintage look.

I have both the TTArtisan and the Fujinon right now. After a relatively unscientific comparison, I'm keeping the TTartisan.

The Fujinon has a lot going for it for sure. There is no doubt it is a better lens overall, is WR, will hold its value better, etc.

The TTArtisan is incredible value, much better build and AF than I expected - 2.5 times cheaper, has some character.

If I want clinical sharpness in this focal length range, I'll use my Zeiss 32/1.8.

There's an interesting comparison https://dpture.com/ttartisan-af-27mm-f2-8-xf-vs-fujifilm-27mm-f-2-8-wr/.

To my way of thinking, the only significant plus of the TTArtisan lens is its cheap price. Given that the Fujifilm is already pretty inexpensive, that makes the price difference seem not so compelling.

YMMV.

(XF-27) $399 - (T.T.Artisan) $159 = $249 That is fairly compelling to me, ~2-3 weeks worth of Groceries! YMMV.

Some Canadian math ($CAD + tax) -- (XF-27) $546 - (T.T.Artisan) $215 = $331. ~ 1 week of groceries!

(this is a joke about Canadian food prices, but seriously, you made a good point)

OK, read the comparison review. Yep there are differences between the lenses. To my way of thinking, which is the better lens is a moot point in the absence of specific, measurable use-case criteria. So many of these internet "discussions" (I've seen a lot of them in the last 30 or so years) boils down to this: https://youtu.be/nehhH9rfnaw

So I think we can put a wrap on this. To summarize:

1. Has anyone tried this? Yes.

2. How well did it work? Decent, see replies above.

3. Issues? Yes. IQ differences. But maybe nothing too scary.

FIN. Taste great, less filling. Decide for yourself.

To comment on the above...

I suppose that it is a matter of perspective. There's always a tension, when it comes to photography gear, between "buy the best at any cost," "you can get very good gear by spending bit less than' any cost' if you approach this rationally," and "I'm cost-constrained and my choice is between the least expensive thing and nothing."

Where you come down along that line matters a lot.

I'm not a big fan of that first orientation — the one where folks throw money at photographic questions, imagining that they always need to get the very most expensive (and big and impressive looking) thing, no matter how much it costs. There are some situations in which buying "the best" regardless of cost makes sense, but one does need to stop and consider in each case whether or not the difference is worth it.

I do understand the third perspective. I remember (many!) years ago when I was a young guy getting started in photography and I could only dream of more expensive, high-end gear. I remember saving for many months to buy my first camera with a single prime lens... and the saving for a long time to get one more lens. Back then I was in that same situation where the choice is between the $149 lens or no lens at all. So for anyone who needs at 27mm f/2.8 lens, cannot afford $399 but can afford the much lower price of the TTArtisan lens... I can understand the appeal. "The bird in the hand," and all that.

However, from my perspective, the $399 price of the Fujifilm lens is already pretty modest as lenses go. And it is a good value, based on my experience with the original and new versions of the lens. Its optical quality is quite good. It AFs well, It is a solid, reliable product. It interfaces seamlessly with my Fujifilm camera.

So, for me, the savings for the lesser lens isn't worth it. I can still buy groceries after buying the Fujifilm version. ;-)

But, as I'm trying to say, YMMV.

Dan

I was surprised today when I happened to notice that LMO (lens modulation optimization) is enabled for the TTArtisan 27/2.8. Since it is a non-Fuji lens, I had just assumed LMO would be greyed out (and therefore disabled).

I checked the Viltrox 23/1.4 and again was surprised to find LMO enabled.

This highlights the fact that Zeiss really has no excuse not to add this to the Touit firmware. Certainly they understand what diffraction is, and why LMO can be helpful some situations.
