Now that I have done it, I will leave my thoughts. Thank you ronlane again for your input.
My intention was to get a good shot that I could print for my friend and grandson that they would enjoy. I also wanted to watch the game and have fun, which brings me to my first thought.
1) From the seats it’s much harder to do than the pros in the well with 20+ pounds of gear and pods. (DUH)
Their shots will be much better so keep your expectations in check. That doesn’t mean you can’t get something you would be proud of, but the hit rate will be very small. I took over 1000 shots and got a dozen solid ones. While this may seem even ridiculous to some, much of it was learning and practice. I expect next time to be much better. The keepers though were solid and I tend to be very picky.
2) AFTER a home run is good opportunity that I missed the first time. I got the HR swing but went into fan mode giving high fives and yelling as he trotted toward first. Thus I missed shots rounding third and stepping on the plate which would have been desirable. Thankfully it was a multi homerun game.
3) Keep both eyes open while shooting. I found out when I did that I had the pitcher in my peripherial vision, even though he was out of the frame. It really helped me with the timing of the ball crossing the plate to see the windup.
4) Manual focusing can work. At least it did for me. I preset focus on third when there was a man on second and waited. Me and my gear were not optimized for nailing AF when the action was happening fast.
5) Bring one more battery than you think you need and maybe an extra card. They’re small and you would not want that to be a limiting factor.
That is I can think of for now. Please add anything pertinent if you wish.
I admit I am a rookie at this but wow it was fun. I appreciate the Mariners policy of letting a fan bring a small camera. As a shutterbug it really added to my game experience.
