Adobe has a frustrating bifurcation between Lightroom CC and Classic. Classic has many features and capabilities missing from the more modern CC, but it's also stuck with that dated, unintuitive, and inefficient user interface. Adobe hasn't shown any sign they intend to merge all the Classic features into the CC app nor bring the Classic UI up-to-date with their rest of their platform.

Well I am happy with classic. I actually prefer the user interface and there is nothing in CC that isn't in classic that matters to me. For me it works, of course, YMMV. I just wanted to point out the option in case it was something you might consider. It does solve your cloud storage issue.

I took some quick portraits of staff (man, they are patient) and it ended up not as sharp as I would expect. Perhaps there are a few setting to tweak, turn on IBIS? It shows f/1.7 and 1/60 at ISO 160 - I should be able to hold that plenty still.

The 1/f trick to determine a safe shutter speed for handheld shooting isn't ideal when zooming in 100% on a 60MP image. I would have set ISO to automatic with a hard stop at 6400, and then shot at the aperture of your choice. A shutter speed of 1/125 or 1/250 would be much safer, assuming static subjects.

Personally, I would never judge an image by zooming into 100$ on a 60 MP image unless I knew I was going to make a huge print or in some other way present it at that extreme magnification. I always try to judge images at the magnification I intend to use them, and I have very few images that I intend to use at the very large magnification of zooming into 100% on a 60 MP image. Of course everyone is free to judge images any way they want, but if patotts is judge portraits of staff at that huge magnification I might advise that unless he intends to use images at that magnification, then he can just reduce the magnification to the size he intends to use and he might be a lot more happy with the images.

Personally, I would also turn the ISO up and use the aperture that one prefers for the shot and I agree that a shutter speed of 1/125 or so might be better, but the exact shutter speed people needs when hand holding depends on how steady people are. Personally, my hand shake a bit and I am not steady at all so I use higher shutter speeds. I might use 1/250 but unless using a highly magnified image I doubt many people need that. I also only sue Auto ISO when the light is changing either erratically or quickly, but that is just my preference. Many people love Auto ISO, I am just somebody who typically doesn't. It seems that the shot in question could have been shot at f/2.8, 1/125 and ISO 800 for very nice results.

As with Apple products, you can say that a) you pay a significant premium when buying a Leica camera and also b) there are no alternatives on the market that offer the same combination of design, ergonomics, quality, and performance at any price.

It's also important to remember that Leica can't produce and sell cameras at the scale of a company like Sony or Canon without compromising on quality and design so, therefore, to survive and thrive they've embraced a strategy of exclusivity where they cater to a much smaller but discerning market and must charge them appropriately to make up for the lack of volume.

Oh, I get it. For someone accustomed to Classic, CC will seem dumbed down and missing a bunch of features. Even if CC had feature parity, I get how learning a completely different user interface would be bothersome for long-time Classic users.

Doesn't this have a leaf shutter anyway? Not sure why electronic shutter would be much of a consideration, since I can't imagine the main shutter is loud.

It does have a leaf shutter. As I understand it, the benefits of the electronic shutter include the option to use higher shutter speeds to allow for wider apertures in very bright lighting without the need for ND filters. Because of the rolling shutter, though, those higher speeds are not suitable for capturing/freezing fast moving subjects. The electronic shutter might also be beneficial when you need a completely silent shutter in discreet shooting situations.

I don't believe the Q3 supports shooting 8k video using the older battery. Then again, I'm wondering how many people buy this camera to shoot video.

One thing I learned yesterday was that in Macro mode min aperture is 2.8.. If you set 1.7 to 2.8 just defaults to 2.8

I just picked up a mint Q2 from the board and will test the lens against the 28/1.4 Lux. I'm contemplating buying the latest "L6" battery, but it appears that it hasn't been released as a standalone product yet.

Sweet!! First Q2 I see hit 3k and I am going to snag as well Would love to see your thoughts on the Q2 vs the Lux.

Cheers

I had a very enjoyable time at Leica Store Los Angeles today. The staff was very knowledgeable, and provided excellent attention and great customer service. They were willing to spend the tie with each customer, and were able to answer all questions. The store is beautiful, very well stocked with all the current products so I could try out anything I was interested in and spend as much time as I wanted with each item. I was very surprised by how busy with customers the store was. There was a good number of people shopping and buying. It seems that whatever is said about Leica pricing ,demand is higher than supply. I saw lots of purchase made, and a great number of items are in short supply and backordered with long wait lists. That bodes well for resale values in the future. A great experience overall.

I and another long time Leica shooter shared time with the Q3. WE gave it a good workout. This camera is very popular and there was a lot of people wanting to spend time with the one demo camera. The store is backordered on the Q3 and still took a lot of orders right in front of me. The Q3 is a very nice camera, with just about the perfect mix of capability, features, and buttons/dials. Wonderful to shoot. The leaf shutter is so quiet that I don't think there will ever be a need for ES except to get a higher shutter speed. I also don't see any reason to criticize the lens. They had a good collections of very fine prints made from Q3 images. They were impressive in all respects. I don't think it is a camera for me, I love my M11 and lenses too much. But it is easy to see why it is so successful after playing with one.

I got to try any of the current lenses I wanted. I found myself lusting after two at the end of the day. The 35mm APO Cron, and the 50mm f/1.2 Noct. I loved each for different reasons optically, but the build quality, and ergonomics were also top. Especially that 35mm APO. Maybe the best lens I ever shot, and so small and smooth. I could have taken the Noct home, but it is a character lens so not willing to spend for that right now. The 35mm APO has about a year wait list at this store, or I may have taken one home. What a lens!

In the end I went home with all my money. If anyone has questions about the Q3 I will see if my short time with one gave me the info needed to answer the question.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your report of your visit. For me it is especially nice to hear your reports about the Leica 35 cron APO. To me that looks like a very special lens and your reports match my expectations. It is a lot of money to drop on a lens, but I very well may get one someday, but I will wait for a few years until they can make enough lenses to satisfy the pent up demand. Given that the 50 f/2 APO (another lovely lens) has reached that point and sells for at least $3,500 less used than new, I think it is not unreasonable to think in a few years the 35 cron APO will sell for a similar $5,000 to $6,000 used. When it does I just might sell my 35 Lux FLE for it, but for now I am very happy with the 35 Lux FLE.

Make sure you pair the Leica 35 APO with a very high resolution camera (or use it on film). I didn't get to try it at 40mp, but at 24mp on the SL2-S, I noticed more aliasing/moire than I expected. It was the visual equivalent of listening to music that's turned up too loud.

Yeah, that makes sense. By the time I get it, which will be quite awhile for me, I would also likely have an M11 (actually I think the next Leica M camera I want is the M11 P, but of course that isn't even out yet). I figure I am a good 5 years away from getting the 35 cron APO.

Is the Q3 equipped with a different charger or does it utilize the same charger as the Q2?

I tried it on my M11 and I think that this combo gets the most out of that sensor I have yet seen. I will say that to me this seems like an "also" lens. It is very clinical and perfect. Appropriate for certain types of subjects. I would also want to keep my 35mm Summilux ASP for more emotional lifestyle images. I like the way it renders.

You are more patient than me, I will likely have one in the next year or so. I have been looking at the Voigtlander version. Optically I think it could serve the same role in my kit. But ergonomically it is not even close. The Leica is just amazing in that regard. The most perfect handling manual lens I have ever felt. With the huge price difference I must decide if that juice is worth the squeeze? Very likely yes, for me.

This is Sussan Farahani who I was fortunate enough to have as my salesperson during my visit to Leica Store Los Angeles. She is very knowledgeable, and spent a great deal of time showing me things, and educating me. She is the number one selling Leica Salesperson in the World. For good reason I say.

This image was shot on the amazing 50mm Noctilux f/1.2 ASPH. For this image I stopped down to f/2 to get some DOF. I fell in love with the rendering of this lens. It reminds me of my Voigtlander 40mm f/1.2 in handling so I may get an VM for this one.

I donít think this has been answered anywhere on the internet, but I suspect they might be different. I tried charging the Q3 battery in the old charger and, while it charged, the 80% full light did not illuminate on the old charger, where it did with the exact same battery at the exact same charge on the new charger. For that reason I retired the old one and started charging exclusively with the Q3 charger.
