Should have asked this above with my battery question. Does anyone know if the Leica Q2 hand grip (the one mounted under the camera, not thumb grip) works on the Q3? I know the Q3 bottom has the three pins for wireless charging but am wondering if the footprint is the same so I can use my Q2 grip on the Q3. From the pictures, I can't tell if the flippy screen changes the footprint or if the extra space it occupies starts higher up from the base of the camera.

Clearly, I would lose wireless charging and Arca compatibility

The dedicated Q2 grip fits the Q3 as both cameras have exact same dimensions.

Thanks Fred!

Great news. Now in addition to getting to use my existing spare battery, I won't have to buy another hand grip! I'm happy to get USB-C charging and don't use wireless charging with my iPhone or AirPods so I won't miss that functionality. The Arca compatible grip would be nice but I'll find a less expensive solution for those times I need it.

Steve

P.S. Just noticed that in a very un-Leica move, the new BP-SCL6 battery is "only" $170 compared to $285 for the less powerful BP-SCL4. Surprising but nice to see.

Sadly the Q3 grip is not Arca Swiss compatible despite looking like it in the product images. It's also made of plastic, presumably as an easy way to allow for the wireless charging function. I'm rather disappointed with it...

Very surprising. Why bother making it look Arca compatible if it isn’t?! Disappointing indeed.

Are the Q2 half cases compatible with the Q3?

Looks like the Q3 comes with the nice Leica origami style drawer box 👍🏼 which I thought was no more since my M11 came in a more subdued retail box style. I know. I know. But once you see such a nice box, hard not to miss it 😎

I hate those cardboard display boxes. Seems just so precious... it's like playing house.
That's the one great thing about the new M6 - just ships in a hard plastic case like the original. That actually is functional.

Worse than that, the company that cuts out and assembled the boxes does a terrible job, leaving shards of thin white paper and dust all over the black surfaces of the box. It’s like white confetti on a black cat.

A true panoramic framing in the viewfinder (56x24) would have been very welcome, turning into the smallest digital X-Pan. I cannot think of a single reason why this is not offered - it would simply boost their sales. The same argument goes for the Sony A7riv and A7rv.

i couldnt agree more with that ... while i find the digital crop pretty useless cause it retains the same form factor and is just a numerical zoom , loosing horizontal and vertical resolution i would love to be abble to frame with a panoramic aspect ratio ... like a xpan

Interesting! Do you have that comparison? I would love to see it.

Hi, Fred. As we discussed earlier, here's the best I have, which are non-equal comparisons, though perhaps still useful in some ways. Both copies of the 28 Lux-M I've had were similar – very good corners, but not perfect. The Q2 and Q2M were a different mix, though. I had one regular Q2, a Q2M, and two Q2 Reporters. The regular Q2 had corners weaker than the 28 Lux-M. The Q2M was slightly decentered, so I don't consider that one relevant. The two later production Q2 Reporters were crazy sharp, though – they reminded me of the CV 35 and 50 APOs.

These are all stopped down to ~f/8 and sharpened using Capture One's lens profile-based sharpening. Screenshots taken at 100% magnification. I didn't do a higher magnification since these are not comparisons of the exact same image, and the crops would just look like blurry abstractions.

Fred, I sent you a PM.

I took delivery of my Q3 on Friday and have been shooting it against my SL2-S. I would love to give my impressions but I'm hoping my old account will be restored as I also had some Q2 images to compare it against.

It is, with some gaps. mathphotograher covered this on his YouTube channel:

07:41 The Leica Q2 handgrip can be used on the Leica Q3 (

The Q3 grip is not Arca compatible unfortunately. It's made of plastic and has the 'wedge' only on the front. The back is completely flat.

I'm impressed folks are getting these already. I put in a preorder and am hoping to receive it before a trip later in June, but so far no ETA.

Popflash told me there would be coming firmware updates for the older models so they would work correctly with the new battery. I think some people have already tried the new batteries in them, but I doubt the've been fully tested with the current Q/Q2/SL2/SL2-S/SL firmware.

I just picked up a mint Q2 from the board and will test the lens against the 28/1.4 Lux. I'm contemplating buying the latest "L6" battery, but it appears that it hasn't been released as a standalone product yet.

I feel the LightRoom integration is already good enough and the experience of Lightroom on my Ipad Pro is phenomenal!!!

The problem with Lightroom is that it forces you to choose Adobe's cloud storage service instead of Apple's iCloud. Lightroom still has better editing and organizational features than Darkroom, though, and since Apple abandoned Aperture years ago, users were left with no options when it comes to digital asset management with iCloud.

I believe you can use the classic versions of Adobe's software and use iCloud storage. I use the classic versions and I don't use Adobe cloud storage. I have a small amount of iCloud storage and I occasionally use it to store photos and when I do those photos still work with the classic version of Adobe's software. I haven't done it on a large scale, but I see no reason you couldn't.

Adobe has a frustrating bifurcation between Lightroom CC and Classic. Classic has many features and capabilities missing from the more modern CC, but it's also stuck with that dated, unintuitive, and inefficient user interface. Adobe hasn't shown any sign they intend to merge all the Classic features into the CC app nor bring the Classic UI up-to-date with their rest of their platform.

Congratulations on the new camera!

As luck would have it, I have to be up in Los Angeles tomorrow morning at 9:00am to renew my Italian passport. My wife and I are going up today to avoid the morning L.A. traffic. The Consulate is just a few blocks from the Leica Store Los Angeles. I have never been to an official Leica store, so taking the opportunity to go there and see it. Dangerous place for me I think. I will leave my wallet in the car. !

I am hopeful they will have a Q3 for me to play with. I will let you know what I think.
