one thing I don't like about my GRIII is that after about 1.5 years the rear wheel got the jumping issue. I have the old Ricoh half case and always stored it in my pocket with the case on and still, dust must have gotten into the GRIII and messed up that rear dial. .

I read somewhere that a cure for that rear wheel issue is to put a drop or two of an electronic cleaner into the dial and work it around. There are several products for this which come in spray cans and are designed for cleaning electronic contacts, such as radio and TV dials, etc. I used it back in the day when I had such electronics and it worked magic. Google 'electronic cleaner spray' to find the products and UTube videos. The comments to one of them said that the cleaner affected the plastic deck of a computer laptop so I wouldn't spray it on. What I would do is spray some into a tiny container and then deliver drops of it to the perimeter of the wheel with a toothpick. Good luck!

I was also concerned about this when I bought my first Ricoh, the original GR Digital, around 2005. The first day I went out shooting, I put a 28mm Voigtlaender viewfinder on the camera, but found that I didn't use it. After that time, I never put a viewfinder on any of the Ricoh GRD or GR cameras. Generally, I just shoot by establishing, roughly, where the frames it by looking at the LCD, but looking only at the subject or the scene when I press the shutter. I much prefer that to the viewfinder because it gives greater

I think I would have had fewer issues if it didn't mean I have to wear my progressive glasses to use these cameras, so I can see the scene and the LCD easily.

I don’t consider it piling on. I would expect GR owners to enjoy the output of their cameras, otherwise they are foolish to own them.

Good to hear so many are happy with the lens, usually those are the make/break element of small cameras.

I think it’s obvious that the way the Ricoh renders isn’t my cup of tea. The pictures in this thread only reinforced that, not to say they’re bad pictures.

Not to pile on here, but comparing the Ricoh GR series to cellphone photos is a bit much. Cellphones certainly have come a long way, and I am pretty amazed by what my 14 Pro can do when it comes to quick snaps for sharing with friends & family or over social media. However, when it comes time to view large and/or print, the cellphone photos will fall apart every time. I have a 36" x 24" print* on the wall above me that was taken over 9 years ago with the 16mp Ricoh GR, I wouldn't consider printing anything

Didn’t have a chance to read the whole thread but my experiences: tried the Ricoh GR III twice and GR IIIx once. My first GR III and GR IIIx were quite sharp with good colors. My issue was that the manual focus experience and AF experience was significantly worse than any other camera + lens combo I’ve used. Yes, there’s snap focus but I think the ergonomics trade off just isn’t worth it. It’s a great idea on paper but every time I use it, I wish I’d rather have a RX100 series camera for the significantly better AF performance in the same size - that or just use the iphone.

I recently tried the GRIII again but it seemed less sharp than my first copy even comparing the files and AF has not improved since I last tried it.

I think the GRIII is a niche tool and the iPhone 14 Pro, RX100 series, X100V (trying this now), Sony A7C, and Leica Q2/Q3 (trying this soon) are better general purpose options depending on what you’re looking for from a size, focal length, and image quality perspective.

I have used 2 earlier models of the Ricoh GR series and have the same experience as @RoamingScott and @tzhang4284 in these two areas..

- I shot at default settings and found colors muted. Perhaps I am spoiled by Zeiss colors and microcontrast straight out from camera.

- AF is nowhere near today's standards, offered by the 3 bigger boys in their entry level mirrorless cameras.

In addition, I wished..

..there was a viewfinder for times when it's really bright outdoors as I had difficulty seeing clearly using the lcd screen. Cranking up brightness helps a bit but at the expense of draining the little battery faster. I did buy spare batteries then to try to mitigate this.

..the lcd screen was tiltable for times when I shot from awkward positions.

..they had kept the built-in flash which was later removed to make space for IBIS.

Having said that, the positive sides of the GR are its large cropped sensor, its truly pocketable size and menu layout.

I did resolve the above drawbacks of the GR by switching to Sony's RX100. However, the RX100 has its own quirks which I live better with.

First time I'm hearing about lacking sharpness.
Hope it's not because they modified the lens (reduced from 7 elements to 6) to make space for IBIS

Software updates for GRIII and GRIIIx. https://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/support/digital/gr3_s.html
It's hard to tell what they are but there is nothing earthshaking, as far as I can tell.

When do you suppose Ricoh will introduce the GRIII & GRIIIx's successors?

What are you hoping for? How about a monochrome GR?

That would be very nice. But there might be a lot of nice things they could throw at us. Improved tracking and eye AF would be very nice. Is even more possible with IBIS? How about a larger battery while keeping the body as small as it is!!??
