There is a lot of discussion about this in the main 400TC image/discussion thread. But it will take some time to find it over the many pages.

Here is one post I quickly found but I know others have samples in that thread:

Good but not amazing. Stacked TC's, even though the internal one in the Z400/2.8 is specifically designed for that lens, is never ideal. For example the 400/2.8 at 784mm/F5.6 (1.4+1.4) is worse than just putting a 2.0TC (800/5.6) on the "naked" lens without the internal TC engaged. As always it will depend on your own thresholds for acceptable sharpness, and performance degradation with TC's is generally more apparent with distant subjects than closer ones so you may notice it more/less depending what you usually shoot.

From a flexibility standpoint, having the option to stack TC's is great. The internal 1.4 + external 1.4 gives you 400/2.8 (naked), 560/4 (internal), 784/5.6 (stacked). If you also have a 2.0 TC, you get 800/5.6 and 1120/8 as additional possible combinations. In my opinion, an external 1.4TC would be a pointless addition because the 784/5.6 combo (internal 1.4+ external 1.4) is worse than the 800/5.6 (naked lens + 2.0TC) combo, so if it were me I would just own the 2.0TC with that lens for optimized combinations of 400/2.8, 560/4, 800/5.6, 1120/8.

Another way to look at it is that a 400/2.8 generally takes TC's better than any other type of lens, so if you do plan to stack TC's, that is the best possible lens to do so with regardless of what you end up doing.

The performance hierarchy is what you're probably already expecting, and proportionate to how much extra glass you're adding to the lens:

Naked 400 > internal 1.4TC > naked lens + external 1.4TC > 2.0TC + naked lens > stacked internal 1.4TC + external 1.4TC > stacked internal 1.4 + external 2.0TC.

I'm of the opposite mind when it comes to whether to mount a 2x vs mount a 1.4x and use the internal as needed. I wouldn't buy a 2x if I had the 400Z. I would either use the lens in the bare lens/1.4internal (400/2.8-560/4) OR use it with external 1.4 and internal as needed (560/4-784/5.6). This keeps the flexibility of the built-in TC in play when wanting ~800mm. If you use a 2x then you are forced to be at 800 (unless 1120 is important but I'd really question the IQ of that vs just cropping more).

When I owned the Canon 200-400 TC I almost never used the 2x on it and would use the 1.4 combined with internal 1.4 for the flexibility. With the Canon combo the 2x was so close to the stacked 1.4s that it was not a reason to switch.

Looking at the members of FM and BCG forums who have done controlled tests with stacked 1.4s vs 2.0 the IQ is also so close it will make no difference. I'll give up the small IQ improvement the lone 2xTC would bring to have the instant 560 to 784 switching.

I also found with the Canon that the external 1.4 was slightly better than the internal...I've seen that reported at least once about the Nikon lens so I don't really buy the manufacturers claims about "matching" the internal 1.4 to a higher standard than an external 1.4.

I found a page where a couple owners answered this same question in this thread:

Thank you very much for the responses, I had my one year pre-order come in... but i passed for now. been using the 800pf with the Z9 ...I really like it, but when light goes away and i need some shutter speed iso gets to be to much...Always looking for reach, going to wait for the S 600mm, I think I would be happier with that lens.

Thanks,
Chuck
