I see Open Box ones on discount but it seems they are still being sold at $8499 for a non-open box...yes I know open box is brand new and I'd surely buy that but the regular price is still the regular price. Of course I could buy it for less with open box and my regular deals I get but as far as I can see most people would still have to pay $8499.

B&S right now a gripped A1 with the 200-600 and the 1.4 and 2.0 extenders as well as spare batteries for $7100.

Why even look at buying this older tech at new prices.

The Sony trade-in promo gets you $500 off the A1. All you have to do is provide a serial number of another camera and you get the discount (on top of whatever deals you might also be able to wrangle - typically a free battery or two). This deal is available to anyone who wants it... presuming you're shopping at an authorized Sony dealer of course.

That is good to know.

Of course if you are really in the know, you will know Sony will give you 20% of MSRP back via Visa or direct into your chequing account if you go through the correct channels....that is on top of any discount you can haggle with the store.

Probably better off going with Nikon, at least the company rewards it's loyal users with firmware updates.
Even Canon is doing better than Sony in that regard. Looks like the A7III update was the last hurrah to suck in unsuspecting purchasers.

Those are new prices - on sale you can pick up the A1 for under $8,000. Sony pricing seems much better here.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for some cool new features via a FW update.

But, I don't see why Sony would be motivated to do so as the 2+ year old A1 still runs circles around the flagships from the other two Goliaths.

I'll take a camera that can still top the charts two years later than a camera that even after multiple FW updates hasn't caught up. When A1 II comes out, how far ahead are they going to leap then?

Yep, one could say the Nikon cameras are released with feature deficiencies and require fw updates in order to be competitive. After all, the A1 is still the camera everyone compared against.
