since you mentioned birding tho, if you are looking to shoot bif there isn't any bird eyeaf on the a9... what i've done with big birds is manually place the focus box on the head, then lock on to it using sony real-time tracking, but that is more difficult and overall the keeper ratio is lower than if you had bird eyeaf on a stacked sensor body.

I know the A9 doesn't have BEAF, but it seems uncanny how often it does focus on the bird's eye anyway - much more reliably than my X-H2S, which does have BEAF.

You're forgetting the current discounts on the A1 ($500) and 200-600 ($150)

That makes the A1/200-600 kit C$10,450 (and it still includes a free $548 battery grip)

I see Open Box ones on discount but it seems they are still being sold at $8499 for a non-open box...yes I know open box is brand new and I'd surely buy that but the regular price is still the regular price. Of course I could buy it for less with open box and my regular deals I get but as far as I can see most people would still have to pay $8499.

B&S right now a gripped A1 with the 200-600 and the 1.4 and 2.0 extenders as well as spare batteries for $7100.

Why even look at buying this older tech at new prices.

The Sony trade-in promo gets you $500 off the A1. All you have to do is provide a serial number of another camera and you get the discount (on top of whatever deals you might also be able to wrangle - typically a free battery or two). This deal is available to anyone who wants it... presuming you're shopping at an authorized Sony dealer of course.

That is good to know.

Of course if you are really in the know, you will know Sony will give you 20% of MSRP back via Visa or direct into your chequing account if you go through the correct channels....that is on top of any discount you can haggle with the store.

I'm definitely not in the know... but maybe it's just as well.

Probably better off going with Nikon, at least the company rewards it's loyal users with firmware updates.
Even Canon is doing better than Sony in that regard. Looks like the A7III update was the last hurrah to suck in unsuspecting purchasers.

Those are new prices - on sale you can pick up the A1 for under $8,000. Sony pricing seems much better here.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for some cool new features via a FW update.

But, I don't see why Sony would be motivated to do so as the 2+ year old A1 still runs circles around the flagships from the other two Goliaths.

I'll take a camera that can still top the charts two years later than a camera that even after multiple FW updates hasn't caught up. When A1 II comes out, how far ahead are they going to leap then?

Perhaps the Sony A1 does not need as many and as major upgrades as the competition?

Yep, one could say the Nikon cameras are released with feature deficiencies and require fw updates in order to be competitive. After all, the A1 is still the camera everyone compared against.

A 2x TC on 70-200 f/2.8 GM ii can be a nice, lightweight 140-400 f/5.6 lens. That lens is a delight to use, and images are sharp and beautiful.

I've use the Sigma 100-400mm FE mount with a Metabones adapter on my Sony A9 with great results. That way you can keep your favorite canon lenses and only buy native as you may need.

The rub is not that it isn't a good camera. It is great. I use mine all the time. The issue is that cheaper cameras get features that could, and should, be rolled out to the a1—things like focus stack bracketing and focus breathing compensation. It appears Sony's business strategy is that they want you to buy multiple bodies to get these features instead of providing them as an update.

Example: if I want to shoot landscapes where I would focus stack I need to buy the a7RV for $3800ish and if I want to shoot wildlife I need to buy the a1 at $6000ish and bring them both...

Reference: I own both of these cameras and am pissed that I can just throw my "flagship" a1 in my bag for all my shooting needs.

Before making a switch to a new system it might be a good idea to rent a body and lens first to see if you like it.

I have jumped several times between different systems, and my biggest regret was selling my A7c.

The problem with renting is you typically don’t have enough time to really understand your new camera and how best to set it up to meet your shooting needs.

I recommend buying used and really giving the new camera a tryout for a few months so you get a real good feel for the camera. If it doesn’t work out, you can sell the camera with very little money loss.

Renting is often suggested, but I agree with Chez, it's not cheap and you don't have sufficient time to assess how well you like it over time. You are unlikely to hate a system nowadays if you know anything about cameras. Only over time will you appreciate the positives and the negatives.

Hey guys so I am currently a Fuji user and have really enjoyed using their system for a bit of wildlife and macro work (if you can see my previous posts you will see examples). However one thing that has annoyed me with Fuji is their lack of 3rd party lenses and lack of long lenses for wildlife. With their recent releases especially the XT-5 not really hitting the mark for me I am now considering Sony.

So I guess my question for the talented folks on this forum is which is a reasonable Sony camera to go for wildlife and

Curious if you had made a decision?

If you go used A9 and used 200-600 you’d be looking at around $3000 based on recent sales on this forum. I don’t think you could find a better solution for the money at that price.

Sure it’s an older camera but it was so ahead of its time that it’s still up there with the best cameras today. It’s just missing the deep learning advances that the new bodies have.
