Lol, my head is spinning like crazy
Ok
Tomorrow I’m going out with…..
6D…….

28-70ii & 135/2.8 SF both same era (arc drive 😂 )
Both light, small and sharp

Toying with the idea of bringing the tiny 90EX For fill?? Got most of the ex range but most is big and clumsy. The 90EX is small plus got the cute little diffuser for it too - special order from New Zealand last year- so bought a couple as it’s Sod’s law I’ll lose one 😂😂

G Dan speaking from his limited and occasional travel/tourist experience writes:

Every choice for travel is a "step down" in some way..blah blah...

It is not for some of us seasoned photographers used to frequent international and/or domestic travel. We carry everything we want and might need on our photography expeditions and we bear the pain and cost of doing so. That means multiple camera bodies, multiple lenses, big and small, accessories, tripods, drones, and so on. But I can perfectly understand how someone with limited and infrequent travel experience such as you may think his own choices are a "step down."

I’d be very very interested to know which focal length was used mostly.
Are you walking round daily carrying the full kit?
Enjoy your holiday 👍🏻

4wks to go for me, trying desperately to get the beach bod to reveal itself in time !! 😂

Salad again <groans> 😩

If nothing else, this thread in sum is a good reminder that there is not one right way to photograph a thing — an all-in-one zoom, a set of primes, long telephotos or not, super wide or not, iPhone, P&S, small camera or large, tripod or not...

... it all depends on what and how you plan to photograph and on what role the photography plays in the overall goals of the trip.

For my upcoming adventures of this type I'll carry a Fujiflm XT5 who a set of five mostly-smallish primes. My wife will carry their excellent "kit" zoom and a 30mm macro plus a XE4. Even the two of us prefer different setups! (She has excellent reasons for her choice, by the way, but they are personal to her particular photography.)

The important thing is to think through your own goals and favorite work practices and then select gear accordingly. Odds are that when you are actually on the road you'll be generally satisfied but also... occasionally wish you have brought something you left behind or did not get... and discover that something you were certain you needed doesn't get used all that much.

That's travel.

Hello everyone

Sorry for the radio silence
A quick update incase anyone was interested.

I bid and won a mint boxed lumix LX100 ordered the auto lenscap, spare batteries and half leather case.
Absolutely beautiful camera.
Then last night won a mint RF 24-105 stm (arriving Monday)

I’m now confident I’ll be taking the Lumix LX100 & RP + 24-105 stm (plus ex90)
Obviously spare batteries too

The Lumix TZ70 will naturally be coming too as that’s the family camera everyone uses.

Was toying with the idea of packing the RF50/1.8 as a fast night time lens, but the Lumix LX100 (24-75mm 1.7-2.8) has IS, is smaller too plus it also means I won’t be dithering which body lens to switch to.

We leave Friday, already decided upon my return I’m going to cull my camera/lens collection….simply too many choices.

Thanks again 👍🏻

wow, I went trough the whole thread and don’t know if I should laugh or shake my head. Obviously OP you have some serious GAS. You don’t want photography to take over but you’ll take multiple bodies, lenses and a small flash. Sounds like the exact opposite to me.

If you‘d have went by your own words you‘d have taken the 6D with the 40 pancake and nothing else. 40 is an excellent FL. Find inspiration in restrictions would be my advice and don’t overthink every possible scenario. And most importantly: don’t forget to enjoy your holiday

The new RF 28/2.8 pancake is now shipping in the US... wonder if it's available on your side of the pond before you head out on your family adventure....?

If you have time, test the 24-105 STM to be sure it meets your needs/expectations. I was pleasantly surprised by my copy which came with the used R6 I bought. But it's a bit inconsistent across the zoom range in respect to peripheral image sharpness, mine being weakest in the 50-70 range. But maybe for what you're doing and expecting, it won't really matter?

Anyway, curious why the LX100 (first version?) and RP with 24-105 STM, which results in virtually the same coverage? Even though the LX100's lens is faster, once you consider equivalency, the old m43 sensor it uses, and other factors, it's not that much of a difference from the STM:

If the LX100 is going to be your go-to walk around camera, then perhaps differentiate the RP somehow? Ditch the 24-105 and bring a few small, fast primes? Yes, the RF 50/1.8, but perhaps also the EF 100/2 you have (plus EF-RF adapter) and toss in the RF 16/2.8 for UWA coverage. This will give you a true low light and wide aperture/shallow DOF option.

If it was me, I'd still stick with my original suggestion of keeping it all EOS-M.

I’ve found a reason to take the lumix…
I’m intending taking a Lego man along for the trip
Lego man at the airport, on the plane, at the hotel, bars, beach, disco etc etc
Yesterday I tried the LX100 3cm close focus at 24mm using f16 shows pretty clearly what’s happening around, the few test shots I tried came out brilliant
So, I’m all set, he doesn’t know, but he’s gonna make a chance meeting with Lego girl in Portugal! 😂
My head is now bursting with funny concepts
It’s reignited my passion, I have a goal, a story to tell…I can’t wait 😎👍🏻

Pancake lens sounds perfect to me! Though I can understand the draw of 24-105. In reality I probably would have lugged along an L lens too 😂

I have a dozen L lenses that never ever see the light of day, too big and heavy. Yes they are exquisite but I’m no longer the die hard I was once, I’m quite happy taking snaps these days 😂

No going back, sat at the airport
At the last minute this morning I shoved the 6D/40stm in my hand luggage next to the lumix LX100.
Drove to the long stay car park, parked up, grabbed the suitcases and at the last second dumped the 6d/40 in the boot!!
I now have just the LX100 plus the TZ70 and my phone.
Honestly just couldn’t face the thought of hauling the bigger 6D all week. The irony is I even picked up a used rf24-105 stm for my RP. Was intending to bring that and the RF16mm. But the size and 2 lenses to carry all week was such a massive turn off.

I’m hoping I made the right choice.

On a side note,…
spotted a few dust specks on the LX100 sensor yesterday. So simply extended the lens, removed the battery, grabbed a empty plastic water bottle, cut the bottom off. Gabbed the dyson and taped the bottle to the hose then placed the bottle over the lx100 lens …snug fit!! Switched the hoover on

Bingo, no dust spots at f16, did the same to the tz70 too 😂

Update:
The LX100 is almost perfect, I spent today taking snaps almost constantly at the 24mm setting. Up to now I have no regrets. Such a versatile camera.
