I was watching landscape photographer Thomas Heaton on YT, discuss his Z7 II camera. He dislikes that it bins raw files, when he changes aspect ratio shooting in camera.

Does the Z8 camera also do this, or has it been changed?

By bin you mean that it fully crops the RAW file to those dimensions, rather than a "virtual" crop with the full FX raw still available?

If so, yes, that's how the Z9 works and presumably the Z8.

I always thought that in reference to imaging Binning meant that multiple pixels were combined into one to reduce the file size. This is what Leica does with its "Triple Resolution" sensor in the M11.

I think what is happening in the Z9 sounds more like an "in Camera Crop" where pixels outside the crop dimensions are discarded. Once again Leica does this differently where the crop is made with settings in the data so it appears cropped, but the whole sensor image is saved and recoverable in post.

The U-Tube dude is in the UK. I think he is using the British term of throwing something out, like in the (trash) bin. Cropping of the RAW file is a better term to avoid confusion.

Excellent catch. Here's a link to the slang:

I am new to Nikon digital, so now I get it. I am not a fan of this aspect of the camera though.

I use Olympus/OMDS, Nikon and Fuji. Only Nikon crops the RAW files. I understand you gain some storage space but you lose options.

Nikon only gives you the option of 1:1 or 16:9 in camera, so you're usually better off shooting in FX and cropping in post anyways.

Did you use Canon? IIRC their cropping is just an indication and the RAW files are not cropped.
Nikon's cropped RAW has the advantage of buffer and file sizes, but uncropped has the versatility. Especially for wildlife the subject sometimes moves erratically and I don't want to possibly lose a critical part of the image.

Ideally cameras would allow selection of either option.
