I'd say that's doubtful. Canon is intent on making special high end products, though with too much emphasis on the "wimp factor" in the URS.

Oh, every larger batch of fruits have a few sour ones. Best left to simmer in their own vinegar.

I follow these threads about almost confirmed coming products as pure entertainment. All the naysayers, all the bickering. Not much substance though before the product in question is available. Thereafter a few will find it very good and some still badly miss the gadget that Niksony has included in theirs. Can´t understand why they insist on staying with the sooo awful Canon.

A zooming teleconverter would be awesome and will be the first.
Probably that's why Canon did not make the 100-300 with TC.
They will be selling more than the old one as it will stay "permanent" on the lens.

Spiratone made a 2x-3x TC in the 70s IIRC. IQ was reputedly poot as one would imagine.

Do we know it it will accept drop in filters? the 100-300 doesn't.

No idea if it does but doubtful. I think it will be a similar design to the 100-300mm. The front element most likely will be the 112mm with screw on capabilities.

A 200-500 F4 must have a front diameter of 125mm no way it can be 112mm (500/4 vs 300/2.8) so the filter thread would around 130mm

My bad, I was thinking the EF 200-400 design being the same as the EF 300mm f2.8. At 130mm let's hope it has a drop in

Found one used at Roberts Camera in Indiana. There are used ones out there if you look. Delivery of new ones is at least a year away according to an Oly rep.

you are right. That appears to be what they are doing. Nuts. I can't imagine carrying polarizer and nd in that size.

Also no built in multiplier. Rumors of a new multiplier 0-1.4x-2x. Sounds great but the devil is in the details.

- look who is getting heated.

It is the same when there is any thread about a rumored lens coming out.

It is a rumored lens, Canon has not announced it, it has not been reviewed, yet you get all the pissing and moaning about how Canon should have done this or that. Don't want such a lens then don't buy one. Don't like what Canon is doing, then don't use Canon gear.

And when it is in stock it gets snapped up because of its specs:

Internal zoom at f4.5 through full zoom, with built-in 1.25 TC. 2x crop factor on M4/3 body.

The Olympus is a 300-800 f/9. You can get the Sony 200-600 and put on a 1.4x extender and have a 280-840 f/9 with internal zoom all the way through for $2600 (or under $2000 if you buy on these boards).

Do you really think the RF 200-500/4 will not be substantially better than the S*ny 200-600? The 200-600 already has plenty of CA and funky edges without a TC.

Maybe check the facts at the link I provided.

This zoom offers a 300-800mm equivalent focal length range, which can be extended even further using the integrated 1.25x teleconverter for an effective 1000mm equivalent focal length. The constant f/4.5 maximum aperture affords consistent illumination throughout the zoom range and is reduced slightly to f/5.6 when the teleconverter is in use.

Built-in 1.25x teleconverter allows you to instantly extend your reach to 187.5-500mm (or 375-1000mm equivalent) simply by flipping a toggle switch. Since the teleconverter is integrated within the lens housing, it is optically matched to the lens for improved imaging performance and also fully maintains the lens's weather sealing.

Plus it is lighter and better built.

The Olympus lens is lighter and better built that is definitely true. But saying it is a 300-800mm f/4.5 equivalent is marketing BS from micro 4/3. It is a 150-400mm lens, which when cropped 2x has the exact same characteristics as a 300-800mm f/9 lens.

A 400mm f/4.5 aperture is 89mm. An 800mm f/4.5 aperture is 178mm. An 800mm f/9 aperture is 89mm.

The focal length and the aperture both get multiplied by the crop factor when considering full frame equivalence. It’s the exact same reason that an iPhone 24mm equivalent lens with an f/1.78 aperture does not match a full frame 24mm f/1.8 lens. It’s because the actual lens is a 6.86mm f/1.78 lens with a 3.85mm aperture instead of a 24mm lens with a 13.3mm aperture.

The lens has the same characteristics, depth of field, light gathering ability, as an f/9 lens on a full frame camera.

The Sony 200-600 with a 1.4x tc will have the same depth of field, noise performance, etc as the Olympus lens. But it does not have a built in TC.

Few people would pay $7500 for a 300-800mm f/9 full frame lens, but you use that special m43 fake math and people will.

Yes the Olympus is way overpriced for a 150-400 f/4.5 lens. Nikon will sell you a 400/4.5 lens for $3000. As mentioned, the Sony 200-600 is roughly equivalent and sold for $2000.

The Olympus looks like a very cool lens and would be the one I'd buy if shooting an OM-1....BUT.....it is way overpriced. The fact that it has a 1.25TC built-in doesn't make up for the staggering price difference.

Also totally agree with the comments from Jesse above. If you are going to call it a 300-800mm lens then you need to call it an f/9 lens. You are not getting a 300-800 f/4.5 lens.....maybe if it actually was a 300-800 f/4.5 the price would be justified.

You mean like saying it is marketing BS when they say the Canon EF100-400 is a 160-640mm f5.6 when on an R7

Fake math by Canon, Nikon, and Sony, I guess.
