300-800mm equivalent focal length range at f4.5. .
The Olympus lens is lighter and better built that is definitely true. But saying it is a 300-800mm f/4.5 equivalent is marketing BS from micro 4/3. It is a 150-400mm lens, which when cropped 2x has the exact same characteristics as a 300-800mm f/9 lens.
A 400mm f/4.5 aperture is 89mm. An 800mm f/4.5 aperture is 178mm. An 800mm f/9 aperture is 89mm.
The focal length and the aperture both get multiplied by the crop factor when considering full frame equivalence. It’s the exact same reason that an iPhone 24mm equivalent lens with an f/1.78 aperture does not match a full frame 24mm f/1.8 lens. It’s because the actual lens is a 6.86mm f/1.78 lens with a 3.85mm aperture instead of a 24mm lens with a 13.3mm aperture.
The lens has the same characteristics, depth of field, light gathering ability, as an f/9 lens on a full frame camera.
The Sony 200-600 with a 1.4x tc will have the same depth of field, noise performance, etc as the Olympus lens. But it does not have a built in TC.
Few people would pay $7500 for a 300-800mm f/9 full frame lens, but you use that special m43 fake math and people will.
