Canon Rumours just posted confirmation (CR3) of RF 200-500 F4 (no built in TC) with release Q4 23 or Q1 24. Some suggestion of a new teleconverter to go with this and the 100-300 2.8.

Although I brought the EF 200-400 on release day, not sure this will tempt me...

No TC and there will never be a new 500/4.
What a shame.

What would be the teleconverter that is unique to the current models? My only thought would be a drop-in or built-in filter. Or a 1.4x/2x in one.

What are peoples guess on the cost of this lens? Not having a built in TC should keep it out of the 11k range of the current EF 200-400 yes?
So would it land somewhere near the 8.5k range?

If the price is right, sign me up!

No. A TC only adds $1000. It will be more like a 400/2.8 price.

Yeah, um, that’s not how this is going to work. First, it’s a 200-500/4, not a 200-400. So compared to the EF version, it effectively already has the TC as part of the main range, but also at f/4. The EF 500/4 is $9,000, and the 200-400 is $11,000. This is effectively both of those lenses in one, and it’s newer. I bet this will be $12,000 minimum, and my guess is $13k.

I suspect it will be $10k US - meaning $17k here in Australia.. similar to the RF100-300 pricing

A 500/4 is always pricier than a 300 f2.8 in the same series, so this has to be more expensive than the 100-300/2.8. I guess it will be $2000 more.

It's interesting how CR is framing it as a 500 f/4 replacement though I regard it more of a dual threat replacing both the 500 f/4 and the 200-400 (-tc). It's a fascinating lens to be sure though candidly, I would have been more excited had Canon released something like Sony's 200-600 f/6.3 (what an inexpensive, reasonably lightweight and highly performing lens) or the Nikon 800 f/6.3. While I see some utility in the 200-500 for outdoor, well lit sports and some WL applications, I doubt that it will be small or light enough to hand hold for extended periods. For me, the 100-500 in spite of its limitations (aperture and wonky tc issues) has much greater utility for me in terms of travel, hiking, hand holding etc. If I have to pull out a mono/tripod for this lens, i's a deal breaker and I'd rather have a prime.

Too often 500mm just isn't long enough. Swapping an external TC is very 20th century. Canon developed the internal TC for film cameras long ago and now they don't use it. Probably all the wimps complained about the weight, and the main market will be sports. If you use a TC is it worth the cost for a 280-700/5.6 that takes a while to convert back to 200-500/4? We'll have to see the MTF with 1.4x and 2x TCs.

They are going to sell a lot of these to the sports crowd.

And it's going to be really, really expensive.

A 500/4 is vorpware like a 300/2.8.

I'm hoping it's a design like RobAmy mentioned recently that can be engaged/disengaged just like the built in TC's. Ideally, it would have a double hump design that would allow you to engage a 1.4x or 2x separately, and this would make it the ultimate swiss army knife of a 200-1000mm range with the flick of the TC.

I would guess this lens will be $12,999 and another $999 or more for the flickable TC.

A less expensive 200-600 f/6.3 will come in a couple years after they milk the high end market.

I've got to say, my initial reaction to this is disappointment. 500mm f/4 is by far my most used lens and I had my hopes up for a lighter version of the EF 500mm f/4L IS USM II with better IS and a built-in 1.4x TC. I don't typically need shorter than 500mm so zooming to 200mm doesn't excite me very much and it does add weight, extra cost and makes the lens more susceptible to damage. I'm guessing this zoom will be at least a few thousand more expensive than the RF 100-300. I'm guessing the special TC will be a flip up 1.4x that you can mount on the lens that will probably cost another $1000. At this point I don't think I'm going to be very compelled to run out and buy the RF 200-500 but maybe the silver lining will be that some used EF 500mm f/4 mk2's will show up on the used market, hopefully for a reasonable price so I can pick up a back-up.

What if it was an external TC with a flip element to turn it on/off? That would be something....

There is a chance this zoom might be almost the same weight as 500II without the TC. Canon has done a good job at shedding weight with the RF line but it's not cheap. We'll see.

Gee Canon not making a lens that everyone wants, just like Nikon and Sony don't.

Just go buy an Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 150-400mm f/4.5 TC1.25X IS PRO Lens for $7,500.

Internal zoom at f4.5 through full zoom, with built-in 1.25 TC. 2x crop factor on M4/3 body.
