Soft focus, noise on R6Mii + RF 100-400

I was shooting some birds in the backyard. Ambient light was good, but as the ISO was set to AUTO, the camera set it to ISO 800. In the zoomed in image, the green background looks like noise that one would see at high ISO. Is it truly noise or something else?

And, for the focus seem to be soft as well. I look at the focus point through DPP and it was on the body of the bird. As this was shot at f/8, was hoping the whole bird to be sharp, but isn't the case.

1/160 at 400mm ...with IS and IBIS you might be able to hand hold that. But for birds I'd try and get that shutter speed up. They move a lot, and their feathers twitch in the breeze.

The image does not look particularly noisy to me. You might try a light touch of noise reduction or specifically a green noise reduction tool. I do see some grain in the OOF areas, but I don't know if that's a characteristic of the lens bokeh or not.

also if you applied a lot of sharpening to try and reduce the softness, that also sharpens 'noise'.

Appreciate the feedback Brian. I did check if my sharpening added any 'noise', but looks like it isn't the case. Here's the screen grab of the RAW file from Lightroom.

By default, no NR is turned on for RAW images in LR. Plus the displayed image in Library view is rendered at lower quality to speed up display. The Develop view is better. Adobe just added Denoise AI in the Develop panel and it works great, better than Topaz Denoise.

I agree with Brian, 1/160 sec isn't usually fast enough for twitchy little birds. Maybe 1/2000. Pretty sure eye focus on the R7 would have worked well in that situation—I use it all the time for birds and other little critters.

He had it at 1/160.

Sharpening always adds some noise even to very clean files. Texture and the Detail slider will as well. Using LrC you may want to add some Masking in the Detail panel.

A little noise is good for printing and does add detail. Screen shots at 300% in LrC. You can't see it at 100%.

Denoise shows at about 240%. Amount 50 on a ISO 16000 file

Like suggested 1/160 a little slow. Was the branch moving? You are really pushing that crop too so your will see noise.

If I need to clean up more background noise from cropping I open Masks, select background and add NR.

The first thing is to really watch your shutter speeds, IMO. Make sure that your images have no chance at motion blur. Then start digging into the images for other areas to look at or improve upon or find issues with...

The bird face looks soft, most likely out of focus. I'm not seeing any obvious motion blur from the subject or lens but there can be a combined effect. If the lens is not so sharp that can also confound the results.

Amazing how good the details look on what appears to be about 90% crop.
Are the birds about 100 ft away from you in the original shot?
