As we know the D850 is a ground breaking camera and when the Z7 came along, many hoped for a mirrorless D850 but the Z7 wasn't it. Now with the Z8, I am wondering which D850 owner is now convinced that they can move towards the mirrorless world?

Sold mine in anticipation of the Z8 announcement, before prices cratered.

Probably going to get a Z9, but I do want to handle a Z8 with a telephoto lens first.

Already switched to mirrorless. Sold the D850 for a Z7II more than a year ago. No regrets.
Not sure Z8, I dont like its heavier and bigger than the Z7II. But the features are tempting. No rush though.

I sold all my Pentax gear and started from scratch with Nikon, with a Z6, in 2019. My first camera with working AF-C !!
But, I was then bitten by the BIF bug and started practicing.
Given the hype about even better AF-C coming with firmware in the Z6ii, I traded up to that.
The firmware never materialised.

So I bought the famed D850 as an interim camera until either the Z6ii firmware did arrive or another Z body came along.
The Z9 came, and was enticing, but just too heavy and bulky for ME. I carried on waiting with the brilliant combination of Z6ii & D850.

Now the Z8. I ordered it immediately. Looks fabulous.
For ME, it is lighter and smaller than the now familiar D850. Otherwise, it is a Z9 for my purposes.

So I will sell my D850 when I have my Z8 in my hands. Somewhat sadly as it has been a true companion, taught me a lot and never let me down. But it was always stopgap camera for me.

Switched from d850 to z9had Nikon launched the z8/z9 together, the z8 wouldve been my choice

The d850 meets my needs. I do not shoot sports or wildlife so the advances in autofocus and high fps aren't really needed. What are enticing are the IBS for my prime lenses, the virtually frame wide autofocus points, and the what-you-see-is what-you-get no blackout electronic view finder. The latter would be particularly helpful when using neutral density filters, which I do often.

What kind of shutter speeds do you use with ND filters? At longer exposure times there is blackout in the Z9 viewfinder.

Good point about the EVF blackout on long exposures. I think the benefit would be the ability to compose better with a neutral density filter on because I assume the what-you-see-is-what-you-get feature of the EVF would brighten the viewfinder image when the exposure is dialed in versus the darker viewfinder image when looking through a DSLR OVF with a neutral density filter on.

After 7 years of shooting D500 and D810 I contemplated adding a D850 for almost a year. Three months ago I picked up a Z9. Absolutely no regrets. Haven't decided what to do with the D500 yet but I haven't touched it in three months.

Prices on the D850 won't crater with a $4,000 price tag on the Z8.

Switched to Z7 from the D850 because of the Z lenses in 2019. Now have both Z9 and Z7. The Z9 was a worthwhile wait. Likewise, Im sure the Z8 will be a worthwhile wait.

Moved on from the D850 when I bought the Z9 and kept the D5 as my second sports body. I really like the Z9 but do miss the form factor of the D850 since I now have two gripped bodies.
Im at a point where Im shooting more for me these days so Im not urgent to keep up with the latest.
Im actually considering a low mileage Z7 down the road when the prices settle just to use as a smaller landscape and static everyday body. That would cover all of my scenarios as I also have a Z50 for travel/hiking. No current plan to get a Z8.

Voted "other" because I moved from a D850 to a Z9, but the Z8 didn't exist at the time. If the Z8 came out first, I would own that instead. The Z8 is the "mirrorless successor" to the D850 and then some. It's a direct competitor to the A1 for a lot less money, and gives people the grip-less option so many have been asking for in Nikon land. I think it's going to bring a lot of the remaining mirrorless holdouts over from their DSLRs.

I have been considering buying a used/refurb Z7v1 just to bring with me when traveling (I mostly just shoot landscapes on vacation), but if I had a Z8 I wouldn't bother with a second, smaller body.

The other camera that will convert a lot of people to mirrorless would be a mirrorless D500 equivalent (Z900?). The D500 sold really well for Nikon and also sells a lot of telephoto lenses with it.

The Z8 is very tempting but for my needs, I still see no compelling reason to 'upgrade' to mirrorless from my D500/D850.

There is a lot of truth here. Meaning, when it comes to stills, you wont see a benefit in mirrorless. The F mount telephotos are awesome. The only benefit would be video and video focus. Perhaps AF when comparing them to a Z8/Z9

Well, I went to a local Camera shop Open Day today. All major brands were showing their equipment. Nikon had two Z8s for handling. I was given one with a Z 100-400mm on for some of the flying Raptors show. Z8 fits my hand like a glove. So much like the D850 in handling, but so many new powerful features. And very fast.
