p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · New Z9 Owner Looking to Replace Peak Design Traveler 45L

Hello there! Just traded in my A1+lenses and switched to my new Z9+lenses (gosh am I in love!), and I'm looking to replace my Peak Design 45L Travel Backpack, mostly due to just how incredibly uncomfortable and heavy it is to wear. I've got a 100-400 Z S, 14-24 2.8 Z, 105mm Z macro, and a 24-120 Z.

I haven't looked at bags for years, so I'm a bit out of the loop on if there's a lighter, more comfortable alternative to the Peak 45L; does anyone have any suggestions on where to start? I've been spinning in circles for a few hours looking. Thank you so much!

I have a very similar kit and use this shoulder bag for travel (airline, not hiking):
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/279085-REG/Lowepro_2037510_Nova_5_AW_Shoulder.html

It fits a Z9, Z6, 14-24, 24-120, 400/4.5, 1.4x plus batteries, cards, filter. Total package is 7.2Kg which allows me to carry on as personal bag and will fit under any airline seat, including small regionals.

I seldom travel with the 105 but if I did, the 14-24 would have to stay home!

Interesting...I outgrew my beloved Domke F-2 for airplane travel a while ago, something like this could work!

If you like the messenger style bag you might consider the think tank photo retrospective 30 v2 or the retrospective 20 v2. I have and use both for my Z9 with multiple lenses and extras. I do prefer the black version, though your mileage may very.

For a "general style" bag, look at Gura Gear Chobe
https://www.squiver.com/blog/review-gura-gear-chobe-2-0-laptopcamera-bag/

For a more comfortable and better designed backpack: Mindshift Elite (aka ThinkTank) or new updated models of the f Stop Ajna or Tilopa
A Vanguard Alta Sky 51D or smaller 45D may also meet your needs

Thanks so much! I was actually already looking at the Mindshift (Think tank) packs, specifically the Backlight, and the Tenba Axis V2 as well. I have an older Tilopa but I find it far too large now, as it was set up for a DSLR kit. The Tenba is intriguing as it seems quite a bit sleeker for how much it can hold, and I've heard Tenba bags are quite comfortable. Hmmmmmm.

I just ordered a Gura Gear Kiboko City Commuter 18L. This pack is designed more for travel than for backpacking and I plan to use it for an upcoming trip to Iceland.

I also recently bought a Mindshift (ThinkTank) BackLight 18L backpack that is well built and would be great for long hikes. However, I think I prefer the Kiboko for travel and if it checks out, I will return the BackLight.

Here's an ebay seller willing to part with their Nova 5 for $75. Didn't want to pay that much, but in case YOU do...

I am actually looking at the everyday 20 and 30l to pack a z9, z7, 14-30, 24-70 plus a varying mix like 135/2, cv/1.2, 135/2.8, cv21, etc.

I like Peak's stuff a lot but gosh do they need to redesign their straps. I have both an everyday 30 and the 45L Travel and they both have extremely thin, uncomfortable straps. (Not to mention the back padding wasn't the best!)

Well, nothing so far has come close to my old kata 103 as comfort, but I need something smaller and lighter to comply with regional flight and that can hold a z9 with a mounted 24-70 with side opening ... not much choice there. And must be waterresistant ... Shimoda is great but too big.

I used Peak Design Everyday 20L and 30L in the past, but the straps killed my shoulders.

Now my primary bag is the Nomatic Peter McKinnon 25L bag and it is by far the most comfortable bag I've ever carried.

But I ran into some trouble's when trying to use it for my Z9, I could make it work but the depth of the bag is a bit too small to fit the Z9 with a lens mounted. It'd work but there was always a bulge. They also have a 35L version, but I haven't tried it.

To get around this issue I ordered the Nya-Evo Fjord 26L which is a much deeper bag. I used that to carry my Z9, 100-400, 24-70, a Zfc w/ kit lens, and some audio gear. It wasn't as comfortable as the Nomatic, but moreso than the Peak Design bags.

I've since sold my Z9 and am back to using the Nomatic full time. Thinking about selling the Fjord, so if interested reach out.

Ended up with a Tenba Axis V2 32L and absolutely love it; so well balanced, so comfortable, so spacious (holds a Z9, 100-400, 400 4.5, 105 macro, 24-120, 1.4/2 TC's, filters, AND a 14-24!?), and it has a nice sleek design. If one criticism, it only holds a 24oz water bottle in the side pocket. Thanks for all the help to those that replied! :o)

I know this is my first post, but I recently looked at the Mindshift Elite 45L, the F-Stop Tilopa 50L, the AtlasPacks Adventure and the Shimoda Action X70. When they all arrived i found i couldnít fit all my gear in the Mindshift, F-Stop or the Atlas. So i went out and found the Shimoda locally and it fit all my gear easily and was more comfortable. All the packs were pretty close in height when all closed up. The Shimoda just has a lot more expandability on top and is a bit wider. For me with a lot of past experience backpacking and having 80L backpacks from Osprey and ArcTeryx the Shimoda fit my body better and the padding on the waist and arms was significantly more comfortable.

Iím coming from the Tamrac Anvil 23 that Iíve had since about 2014.

The gear i put into the Shimoda is the following.
D810, Z9
Nikon FTZii
Tamron F 15 - 30 2.8
Nikkor F 24 - 70 2.8
Nikkor F 70 - 200 2.8
Tamron F 150 - 600 G2
Nikkor Z 105 2.8
RRS TVC-34L with BH-55

I believe the Action X50 has a similar waist belt and shoulder straps and if it does might be a more comfortable option.

Best,
Jeromy

I've been happy with my Shimoda Explorer v2 - you probably need to go with the large insert fit lens and camera. It might not be deep enough if you are looking to fit the Z9 with the 100-400 mounted.

There are quite a few good bag options out there these days, just make sure that the bag works well with a gripped body. I really like my Mindshift 26L, but it's not designed for a body with a grip. I believe that the larger 36L bag would work fine though.

I also really like the Shimoda Action X50. I don't have one, but I feel like it is great if you want to pack some extra gear (jackets etc.) on your trips.
