p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · The new Nikon Z8 vs the Sony A7RV and potential A9III

So the new Nikon Z8 is out with stacked 47.5 Mpixel fully electronic shutter and in the US is priced at $3999 USD.
So itís $2500 less than an Alpha 1 and shoots 20 FPS 14-bit RAW, has CFExpress B & UHS-II and also supports 8K Video.
If lenses and third party offerings is a reason for the Sony so be it. If you really need 61 Mpixels great, if you think AF tracking is better thatís a Sony plus but I think it will put a lot of pressure on Sony to come to the party with a new competitor or an A1 price reduction IMHO.

I shoot with both an A1 (x2) and A7RV now but did also own a a Z9 for a year and the Z8 looses little functionality and ~400 grams to the Z9 and at $3999 thatís impressive.

Iím curious what others think. The Nikon Z mount S lens portfolio has really rounded out and really wonít hold you back. Sure itís not as extensive as Sony with Sigma or Tamron added in but pretty much all the bases are covered and at the telephoto end only Sonyís 200-600 G gives Sony users some more flexibility but Nikonís new 400 and 600 with integrated 1.4x TC, 800/6.3 PF, 400/4.5, and easy to adapt f-mount 500/5.6 PF are all very nice and all are unique right now.

Also I can share that when I used the tiny Megadapt ETZ-21 E to Z adapter my Sony lenses worked very well on the Z9 and itís so small you really donít know itís there.

As I said, just posting to see what others yhink the impact to Sony will be.

Thank you for your time.

The impact is obvious to me...Sony will sell less A1 units than they would have if the Z8 didn't exist.

Sony still leads the way in pure AF, but the Z8 will be a great take anywhere, do anything body just like the A1 is. A body with very few compromises (and some nice usability upgrades vs the A1). Add to that Z mount can shoot F, EF, and FE lenses and autofocus them very well...it's a very compelling mount in addition to the excellent first party glass that now exists.

The biggest question now is...when is the A1ii coming and what will it cost?

I think you're just seeing healthy competition. As to how Sony reacts to this, vs how Canon does....vs how Nikon reacts to something Sony does vs etc...ad nauseum.....I doubt anyone can throw bones and tell you what will happen.

I assume at the minimum, the big three will do things to compete, and there will be adjustments they will make as a result of that competition.

And we all benefit.

Scott, all very good points. The Z9 that I bought and sold was to big and heavy for my everyday carry but this looks nice.
Of course price wise I compare it to a $4600 lightly used A1 or a Z9.

How many times must it be said that Fro's AF tests are some of the worst on Youtube? His methodologies are inconsistent and continually expose his lack of deep understanding of the different models' nuances.

I've even seen him butcher Sony AF settings, which is almost impossible to do, but he managed.

z8 is still a porky heavy brick:
a1: 665g
z8: 910g

z8 has lousy battery life, just like the z9:
a1: 530/430
z8: 340/330

flash sync speeds:
a1: 1/400th-1/500th
z8: 1/200th

z8:
-no 30fps raw
-no heat sink on the sensor
-no 3rd-party lens support to speak of
-weak low rez evf
-backup shooting crippled with uhs-II speeds and two different cards, no cfx-a
-nothing comparable to sony real-time tracking subject acquisition
-still no 200-600, can't trust the nikon lens roadmap
-entire z-mount platform crippled with stepper motors and inability to display true wysiwyg dof
etc.

the only good news i see for the z8 is that it's priced where the z9 should have been priced all along, given that they are basically the same camera.

We are simply seeing the next logical generation of cameras. Sony was doing stacked sensors a decade ago. So they are a bit ahead of the curve. Competition is a good thing and hoorah for Nikon clawing their way back out of the abyss. I'll be curious to see what Sony offers next. I am not convinced that a "fully electronic shutter" is a good idea. Only a global shutter can truly replace a mechanical shutter.

He comes across as someone who is getting paid by Canon. Also just seems like a very easy to dislike person.

I wonder if the A1 will get a price cut this summer. The Z8 price is certainly very competitive at more than 50% less than the A1 and less even than the A92.

the z8 is a much weaker camera than the a1, not in the same class.

if anything, the z9 will get a price cut this summer, because the z8 has 95% of the same functionality as a z9.

aka, if you paid $5500 for a z9 you are gonna be upset to see nikon release the same camera for $4k now, in a smaller more manageable form factor.

if sony did something that stupid, the whining out here would be off the charts

I made a Z8 pre-order this morning but then canceled it shortly after I came to my senses. I think AF, sensor image quality, and EVF are good enough to be competitive and really splitting hairs.

The main issues I see are size (GFX100s territory), battery life (shorter than the A1 by a lot assuming they're all playing the same CIPA games), and Nikon's lens selection (not as good as Sony's from a breadth of selection and overall technical quality except for wildlife telephoto lenses and f1.8 primes IMO).

The only reason I considered it is I think the Z8 would be great as a hiking wildlife photography camera paired with the 400mm f4.5 and 1.4x TC. Outside of that, I think Sony cameras and lenses are as good or better than Nikon's offering in a smaller package.

I feel like this is a very compelling release for Nikon. This is actually the perfects size for me to use with telephoto lenses, but I know that ergonomics are highly subjective.

I think that this finally brings Nikon a lot closer to parity with Sony in body options. There was a big hole between the fast performing z9 large brick of a camera and the much smaller, more mainstream but slower Z7 II that couldn't compete too well with cameras like the a7IV, a7r IV and a7r V when it came to AF operations.

I feel like most people were priced out of the Z9 and/or didn't want the large and heavy camera for general purpose use (myself included.) If the online enthusiast community is any indication of the desires of the camera market, this body will sell like hotcakes and pressures Sony to reduce the price of the a1 series.

All of these systems are splitting hairs now. The only relevant choice for a decision is which lens ecosystem you want to invest in.

I think Sony does need to rethink their pricing strategy going forward. Canon also.

But I don't know if they will...especially if Canon keeps on with their pricing. If Canon keeps R3 price as is then R1 will be at minimum $500 more...probably $1000 and that would put it higher than A1. Z9 and Z8 would still be value leaders for stacked sensors. If A9III comes with a lower MP sensor and is priced at $4500 (as A9II is) then that may appear high to some comparing to the Z8 which will have higher MP stacked sensor.

However, if A9III is crazy FPS, pre-capture RAW, better EVF (a given), better card slots (a given), better AF (a given) and is only $500 more than Z8 then even if it is only 24-30MP it is certainly the better camera in my book. And way better value than R3 which would be the closest competitor based on MPs.

I think as they stand now the A1 deserves some of its premium price over Z9. But not all of it.
I think most likely Canon decreases R3 price when R1 comes out and puts R1 at the same price as A1.
Hopefully Sony can decrease A1II price to $6K. That seems a reasonable price to me.

Don't forget that having a mechanical shutter is a plus from Nikon's elimination and can be worth extra $ for some situations.

As in every other industry, the market leaders set the pricing, and everybody else follows... the lower a company is in market share, the more they try to price aggressively versus the leaders. As long as Canon and Sony can sell all the products they produce, their prices will stay high.

Yep, with Nikon dragging their butts as far as market share, I see zero incentives for Canon or Sony to lower their prices. Thatís like saying Sony needs to lower the price of their lenses to match Sigma, Tamron etcÖ not going to happen.

Apart from weight, Z8 looks like a killer release. Sony users beg for a firmware update for features in lower priced models. Nikon puts all its Z9 specs in a lower priced Z8. Sony A1 seems grossly overpriced and overmatched in some specs compared to the Z8.
