How much something is worth to another person is impossible to judge. I don't quite understand how we are to answer your question. If you think about those situations where the Z6 II was not able to keep the subject in focus, and if all those shots were in fact in focus without any significant effort from the photographer, what would it be worth to you?

The Z8 also adds a near real-time viewfinder which to me is much more significant as it reduces the need to overshoot because the shot timing is off from what is seen in the

I guess the simple way of asking the question is how big of a difference is the autofocus from a Z6ii to a Z8 with a focal range of say 70-400 (70-200 or a 100-400) for most sports or perhaps portraits where people are moving more quickly than a walk (or a dog running)? I find the Z6ii not that useful for birds in flight other than something predictable like a vulture, but I'm not too worried about that style of photography. I'm happy with the Z6ii for stationary portraits, people walking (parade-tested) and for the most part smaller kids running around a baseball field. One example with small kids where the hit rate is poor without me adding some extra purpose to what I'm doing is a kid on a swing. I can get a sharp shot at the end of the swing cycle, but not in the middle of the motion. If people feel they can trust getting sharp eyes most of the time with a kid on a swing at any point with a Z8 (or during a similar type of action shot), that's the type of info I'm looking for. YouTube and other reviews certainly suggest it is a massive step up but I trust the people on this site more

I will try to get my hands on a Z8 when possible but the added experience from this group is also of interest. Thanks.

That first NR notice of the lugs failing does not tell us what lens he had hanging off the body. Sure, the image shows a "normal size" lens apparently attached to the Z8. That would lead the viewer to believe that the lens was not too heavy. We still do not know what lens was attached to the Z8 when the lug failed.

NR said that there were multiple reports of lugs failing. Where are they NR?

And do we hear anymore about the lugs parting from the Z8 body? No we do not.

Now we have CanadaMark telling us about the guy with the huge lens hanging off the Z8, with the entire load dangling to his side. Expecting the lugs to withstand that kind of weight...... is just stupid folks. I would be concerned that the flange would bend or break.

So you have this camera whose front is made of composite material. You already know this. What do you do? You hang a huge lens off the front and dangle it by your side.

Common sense is lacking today.

About a year ago I sold off my last DSLRs (D850/D500). This coincided with the purchase of a Z9. I have spent that last year shooting with the Z9 and Z6II.
My prior set up was DSLR's for birds in flight, Z6II for slower wildlife, landscapes, and macro. Once I got the Z9, I pretty much stopped using the DSLRs and Z6II. So, even when traveling with the Z9 and Z6II, I had to find reasons to use the Z6II. In the end, I held onto the Z6II to serve as a landscape/macro and back-up body in the field. The autofocus and button control on the Z9 was so much better than the Z6II that I just did not enjoy using the camera any longer.
I was preparing to buy a 2nd Z9 when the Z8 was introduced. I bought the Z8, but kind of wish I bought a 2nd Z9 instead. The advantages of a 2nd Z9 would have been the single battery type and elimination of SD cards. The latter lightens the load and complexity when traveling.
The advantages of the Z8... smaller and lighter body with near 100% functional overlap with the Z9. Had the Z8 been introduced prior to the Z9, I'd definitely have a pair of them rather than what I currently shoot.
So, to answer your key question... In use the Z8/Z9 is fundamentally better than the Z6II... this applied to ALL aspects of the experience except for the weight/size advantages of the Z6/Z7 body design.

regards,
bruce

Thanks very much Bruce! This is the real world response I was hoping for! Am I remembering correctly that you were going to keep a DSLR for your kayak? I have been on the fence about just ditching the D500 and 200-500 as well as the Z7 so that I could update to the 180-600mm as well but it's the kayaking that keeps me linked to the D500. I'm out on the ocean and tend to be surrounded by sea lions that keep me moving around a lot

It sounds like we enjoy a similar type of photography... I love shooting from kayaks and canoes. In fact, after living in Minnesota for the last 33 years, I am trying to move back to California to be near a coastal bay where I can easily kayak in and around seals, sea lions, and coastal bird species.
Ever since I bought the Z9, I've used that camera for 95% of my wildlife photography. The AF is so sticky that I find it much easier to maintain focus w/ that camera than with the D500. I bought the Z8, and that will be more watercraft camera. In fact, I posted a thread where I used the Z8 and 400 f4.5 + 1.4x. All of the loon shots were taken from a canoe. I think I had about a 90% in focus rate. To be clear, I took over 2000 pictures and 90% were in focus... You will love the AF in the Z8/Z9.

I sold my 100-400 so I could buy the 180-600. I suspect that this will be the lens I carry in the canoe/kayak. Paired with the Z8, I think it will be a powerful combination.

Can we recommend a brand/model of small case(s) that holds just the Z8 (and an adapter if you use one)?

Thanks again Bruce for the info. I ended up taking a leap of faith without having the Z8 in my hand.....I picked up an open box copy from B&H It should arrive next week. I've put my Z7 up for sale with my 200-500 and 24-200 to cover most of the cost hopefully. I'm excited to see what the Z8 can do and I'm hoping it will reinvigorate some of my older passions for wildlife and sports. I'm keeping the D500 + 500pf for the kayak. One day I'm sure I'll move on from the D500 but one step at a time

Congratulations
If you take the time to program your new camera to optimize your shooting goals, and modify this programming as you see fit, you'll find that the Z8/Z9 creates photographic compositions that you would have otherwise missed. I have found that I need to crop less to improve compositions with my Z8/Z9 because the focus point moves dynamically through the viewfinder. So rather than coordinating my thumb to move the joystick not he back of the camera, I can focus on placing my subject in the optimal location.
Having the 800PF provides me with the "same" field of view as the D500 + 500PF, as a result, I now have many 40MP + images of well-composed subjects. This enables me to make the most of my subjects where the small details matter.

cheers,
bruce

Hoping you enjoy it, I love the Z7/6/5 style body and they feel right to me, and I was not expecting to like the Z8 much, thinking it just a bit big.. but after I picked it up I had an immediate "Man this is nice, time to start saving" moment.

Thanks and that's great to hear about not having to crop as much. I'm really looking forward to it! The 800pf is on the radar but down the road with its cost. I'll likely pick up the 180-600mm sometime later this year or early next year though.

Thanks! I do like the size of the Z7 / Z6ii for the portability aspect. But I also like the size of the D500 for the bigger lenses so I'm sure the Z8 will be great. Will be tough saying goodbye to the Z7 for landscapes when it would give me essentially the same image as the Z8 with a smaller body but the additional sports & wildlife benefits of the Z8 which I'm expecting is something I'll really appreciate. I hope you get a chance to pick one up for yourself too!

I'm not sure what you mean by "why?"

If you mean the price of the grip, it is nicely designed very functional, dramatically improves ergonomics for vertical shooting, has the hot-swappable battery feature and can act as dual battery charger (with appropriate power supply). Also Nikon needs to make money from something.

The camera itself is substantially (almost 40%) cheaper than its nearest competitor (Sony A1). Yes, it is expensive but considering its high-resolution stacked full-frame sensor, and the feature set, its pricing is aggressive IMO. One cannot really compare to second hand market. Used is used, new is new.

Hopefully you don't have any issues with it, because I don't think Nikon Canada will service or repair it under warranty.

Technically, Z7 will give you better DR at base iso or anything under ISO 500. However in real life, I am not sure how easy it is to see that. I still keep my Z7 ii but have not really used it much since I got Z8 and Z9.
Also I think Z8 will replace D500 nicely as you get roughly similar pixel count on Z8 when in DX mode. The only significant
difference will be that D500 battery will last quite a bit longer than Z8 but you also get less FPS and no true silent shutter.

I kept Z7 ii mainly for when I scuba dive but surprisingly Nauticam released Z8 housing within a month of Z8 launch and I got
my housing about a month ago.

Yes I thought of that. Fingers crossed.

I haven't looked too deeply into it but I thought you could still send it into Nikon USA from a USA address. I spend a significant amount of time in California so it would be easy to do.

I've read that the DR difference is pretty minor as you state so it's really the size that I'm hesitant to say goodbye to. I must say I've wrestled with the idea of keeping the Z7 as it's a great camera for what I use it for. I'm sure when the Z8 is in hand and I get used to it all thoughts of keeping the Z7 will disappear.

Your underwater images were amazing.....so I look forward to seeing what you do with the new Nauticam housing with the Z8!
