I guess the simple way of asking the question is how big of a difference is the autofocus from a Z6ii to a Z8 with a focal range of say 70-400 (70-200 or a 100-400) for most sports or perhaps portraits where people are moving more quickly than a walk (or a dog running)? I find the Z6ii not that useful for birds in flight other than something predictable like a vulture, but I'm not too worried about that style of photography. I'm happy with the Z6ii for stationary portraits, people walking (parade-tested) and for the most part smaller kids running around a baseball field. One example with small kids where the hit rate is poor without me adding some extra purpose to what I'm doing is a kid on a swing. I can get a sharp shot at the end of the swing cycle, but not in the middle of the motion. If people feel they can trust getting sharp eyes most of the time with a kid on a swing at any point with a Z8 (or during a similar type of action shot), that's the type of info I'm looking for. YouTube and other reviews certainly suggest it is a massive step up but I trust the people on this site more
I will try to get my hands on a Z8 when possible but the added experience from this group is also of interest. Thanks.

About a year ago I sold off my last DSLRs (D850/D500). This coincided with the purchase of a Z9. I have spent that last year shooting with the Z9 and Z6II.
My prior set up was DSLR's for birds in flight, Z6II for slower wildlife, landscapes, and macro. Once I got the Z9, I pretty much stopped using the DSLRs and Z6II. So, even when traveling with the Z9 and Z6II, I had to find reasons to use the Z6II. In the end, I held onto the Z6II to serve as a landscape/macro and back-up body in the field. The autofocus and button control on the Z9 was so much better than the Z6II that I just did not enjoy using the camera any longer.
I was preparing to buy a 2nd Z9 when the Z8 was introduced. I bought the Z8, but kind of wish I bought a 2nd Z9 instead. The advantages of a 2nd Z9 would have been the single battery type and elimination of SD cards. The latter lightens the load and complexity when traveling.
The advantages of the Z8... smaller and lighter body with near 100% functional overlap with the Z9. Had the Z8 been introduced prior to the Z9, I'd definitely have a pair of them rather than what I currently shoot.
So, to answer your key question... In use the Z8/Z9 is fundamentally better than the Z6II... this applied to ALL aspects of the experience except for the weight/size advantages of the Z6/Z7 body design.
