Hoping for some help from those who have a lot of experience with the Z8/Z9 AF in comparison to the Z6ii if possible.....specifically for action / moving portraits but not necessarily BIF. I have a D500, Z6ii and a Z7. The Z8 really interests me for many reasons.....but the financially-mindful part of me is holding back because the big gain would be the cAF improvement and I'm not really sure how much of a benefit it will be for my shooting. I like bird photography but I do very little of it. I will likely find myself doing more sports photography if anything and that would be my real reason for a Z8. With that said, my Z6ii does very well with slower action (kids sports, parades, etc) and so I'm wondering if beyond all of the YT hype if the Z8 makes that much of a meaningful difference over the Z6ii for sports photography (thinking tennis, hockey, soccer, football, running, maybe cycling and swimming.....not motor sports). I want a more modern sensor than the D500 for any fast-moving photography when I'm not in a kayak. Here's my current setup:
D500 - I'm keeping this for kayaking as I can't afford to drop a Z8 and a Z lens in the water, plus I want the pixel density. I don't trust the Z7 AF in a moving kayak for telephoto lenses.
Z6ii - I'm keeping because I simply like the smaller files for portraits and low-light photography. The keeper rate in kids sports and parades is enough to justify keeping it (it does well for the most part).
Z7 - perfect for landscapes, urban, travel and stationary portraits. I like the small size of the body but this may be the trade off for a Z8.
In a perfect world I would buy the Z8 and keep the rest too, but I think I would sell the Z7 for the Z8. I'm not sure if the AF gain with the Z8 (over the Z6ii) for sports photography and moving portraits would justify the cost difference and losing the convenient size of the Z7 for landscapes though.
Thanks for your thoughts. I realize this is a very personal decision and picking up a Z8 for myself is the way to go but while I'm waiting to find a Z8 to try I'm hoping for some early feedback from others. Ultimately I'll of course put one in my hands for a final decision. Thanks for your thoughts!
