A friend, who is a very accomplished wedding and event shooter, told me the other day that he was just about ready to pull the trigger on a Z9. He said that his Z7IIs are getting a bit beat up but that they do everything he wants them to do. I asked him why he hadn't bought the Z9s when they first came out and he replied (something like)...."I never buy new. The eager new gear buyers snag every new thing then fire sale them when the next thing comes out. So I will get a couple of Z9's on the used market and save a couple of thousand or more."
There is an element of truth in this. There is a pretty nice D6 for sale right now for $3K. Heck of a PJ/Sports camera for half price....Show more →
This is true with almost everything technology wise, once a new model is released previous model resale drops quite a bit, the reason I invested in the Z8 is because I do not plan to get rid of it for a long time and it was worth the price of admission because I could use the features now. I debated internally for a few days on whether or not a Z8 for $4k or a used Z9 for just a few hundred more would be worth it, but in the end I prefer smaller bodies (but not too small, I struggle with MFT and even the Z6 needed the Smallrig bottom plate for my pinky) and twisting my wrist for portrait shots doesn't really bother me that much. I really have come to love my Z6 and its flexibility, but I've noticed on a number of occasions I'd prefer a bit higher megapixel count for cropping and am willing to sacrifice a bit of that high ISO noise for the extra crop freedom. Funny, back with my D700's (what brought me over to Nikon in 2008) I was perfectly happy with 12mp and was the town crier for "stop giving us more megapixels, give us better high ISO and DR". But as with all things tech, 15 years has done a lot for the quality of images these high mp sensors are putting out so will give 45mp a go and see how much I like it, if it bugs me too much the Z8 will serve me just fine until the Z6III is released which will hopefully have an edge in high ISO IQ beyond what the Z6/Z6II offer today, but I have a feeling I'm going to grow very accustomed to the advanced AF performance the Z8 provides (over Z6/Z7 series). For me, the full price for the Z8 was worth it, but I can see for others a benefit in waiting a few years for prices to come down.
