I'm going to have to pass on that grip for now. Hopefully Vello or another 3rd party makes a better fitting grip. At the very least it will cost less for something I only use occasionally.

Well what about the 6 year old Sony A9 then? Is this Z8's auto-focus as good as that 6 year old camera? I'll tell you right now, it's not even as good as the 6 year old A7R III when it comes to subject tracking and recognition. How can it possibly compare to it's actual modern competition from Canon and Sony if several 6 year old cameras are still out performing it?

You may tell me it is not as good as the A7r III but why would I believe you? I can't see any reason to believe such a statement. You have lost all credibility and appear to be merely making statements in favor of a brand and frankly statements that are not believable.

I would love for you to explain how I've lost credibility by saying something that you have to choose "not to believe" in order to discredit. So which brand is it that I'm in favor of here? Any brand with better auto-focus? Your butthurt projection is pathetic. Nikon doesn't care about you; it's a corporation not a friend. Get a grip dude, corporate branding shouldn't be part of your identity to the point where it upsets you personally.

That's total BS, not to mention there's more to this than just auto focus subject tracking. I'm sure you haven't used a Z9/8 , so how would you really know ? You've been shooting Sony for years , nothing wrong with that, but don't be a fanboy.

Uh, you said something that makes no sense and is clearly untrue. I didn't choose to not believe you. What you said was is obviously untrue. If someone says unicorns have invaded my home. I don't choose to not believe them, they have made an obviously untrue statement, so I don't believe them. The same with you. You are obviously in favor of Sony. Give me a break.

By the way my primary AF cameras are Sony. I have both an A9 and an A1. These are the primary cameras I use for moving subjects. So, it is pretty hard to cast me as a Sony hater. I do have a Nikon Z7 that I use for things that don't move and I like it, but there is a reason I still have my Sonys. I never said or even thought Nikon cares about me or Sony for that matter either. Corporate branding is not my identity, but it appears to be yours.

So to summarize. You lost your credibility by making a ridiculous claim. You have zero evidence for that claim: that the Sony A7r III will AF better than the Nikon Z8. I don't have to choose to disbelieve this claim. I call bullish*t, and it is up to you to provide evidence for this outrageous claim if you want to maintain your credibility.

I owned and shot an A7RIII for a number of years. Loved that camera. I have had opportunities to shoot the Z9 and have heard the Z8 AF is equivalent. In my experience the A7RIII doesn't come close to the Z9 in AF. The difference in the overall shooting experience of fast moving subjects, because of the lack of a stacked sensor in the A7RIII, is dramatically better in the Z9.

I am a Sony A1 shooter, but still I am really surprised that one could claim what you have. The superiority of the Z9 is clear.

I do favor the A1 over the Z9/8 AF because of workflow issues, ease of use, the Z9/8 case of ADD in some circumstances, and form factor. But, because of the benefits of stacked sensors including in AF, I would happily shoot the Z8 over the A7RIII.

Trolls are minor irritants in the same way as disrespectful posters are.

Important things are what happens to a company's sales and profits when they start making competitive products. For proof just check Nikon's latest financial results. Even being the low cost leader, margins are amazing. Catching up is paying off for Nikon.

Nikon designed the battery grip to look goofy like Sony's battery grips which is weird. Nikon's battery grip for the D850 is by far the best in terms of tight fit and ergo IMO.

....and with the absolute best AF system in the world, many photographers can take a whole bunch of sharp images that are boring as hell!

Canon, Sony and Nikon all have great AF systems that can produce stellar results in the right hands. You can own the world's finest piano, but if you don't know how to play it....

You’d mentioned “workflow” in your Z8 teaser post as well, and that no one was talking about new Nikon workflow innovations. What does this mean to you? Nothing stuck out to me.

what workflow issues. my 9 essentially dropped into my flow though i did have to wait awhile for one piece of software to catch up.

By workflow I meant how tasks were accomplished when operating certain areas of the camera. Not photographer related workflow.

The software and workflow that I have been referencing include changes to the awkward acquire, hand off, sequence that is used on fast moving subjects to get focus as early as possible, and then track as sticky as possible. I experienced this when I shot the Z9, and it is commonly referenced by many Z9 shooters. This is what is meant by the Z9 AF being more difficult to use than say the A1 or Canons.

It seems there was test versions of the firmware out there that tried to address these issues. These changes involved differences in the way AF areas worked I was told. I have not tested a production Z8 so have no idea what made it ito release. My guess (and that is all it is) is that if these changes are to make it into the cameras they may be brought out in FW updates to the Z9 & Z8 at the same time. It was told to me that this was all software changes. It included a statement that the Z8 had "improved".

All that was involved in this wasn't discussed except the AF stuff software. I guess we will see relatively soon whether an update with these changes shows up.

Ah, well "workflow" typically refers to the process that occurs between taking a photo and exporting the final version from PP, hence our confusion I think.

I set my Z9 up via Hudson Henry's suggestion for the hand off, and haven't found it superior than simply using Area AF. 3D tracking falls apart faster on a busy background than Area does in my experience. Once Area has the subject locked it rarely lets it go. Acquiring it in the first place is what can be a challenge, and that is still an issue with the handoff method.

Version 3.0 improved Area quite a bit. I tend to not concern myself with anyone's pre-3.0 impressions because the difference is substantial.

I've been using Nikon for significantly longer than I've been using Sony, I don't know why anyone would assume otherwise. When it comes to AF, subject tracking and detection are the ONLY meaningful differentiators in AF in recent cameras outside of increases in calculations per second that comes with a stacked sensor...

You literally use Sony cameras for Moving objects and are giving me crap for saying that Nikon is behind on its its AF object recognition and tracking? There are COUNTLESS comparisons for you to research if you want too, you don't have to take my word for it. The Sony A7R III with its current firmware has legitimately better subject stickiness than this Nikon is showing, not even to mention the A9. By the way, I've been using Nikon much longer than I have Sony, I don't know what's up with your obsessions with branding.

I used the A7Riii for a long time on the last firmware and this is one the dumbest things I've read in a while. You're making yourself look like a fool.
