Any big difference between the samyang mki and ii?

Added switches
DDSSM -> STM
Alloy -> Polycarbonate body shell

I am happy with the original. I am sure the more expensive options are somewhat better, except for the ZA which I tried. The original Samyang AF F1.4 focuses quicker and has better image quality than their F1.8, which is a pretty decent lens too. I do prefer handling the II series.

I don't think I've seen that announcement. Do you remember where you read it?
Seems Sony is still working with Zeiss. E.g., the Sony ZV-1 II announced on May 23 2023, with Zeiss optics.

Interesting. Last year, there was an announcement covered on multiple sites that they were exiting photography lenses but were still going to make optics for microscopes, telescopes, and the like.

There appear to be more recent statements that they are not exiting but instead are de-emphasizing some product lines. They also have a new lens line for video.

Hmmm…

If I am thinking of the same, I think it might have been this comment that started it all...😜

There were two confounding things. Prior to Covid, Sony and Zeiss indicated stopping their collaboration, which made a bunch of us bummed that an RX1Riii seemed a pipe dream (among other things), but in the midst of 2020, Sony announced an expanded collaboration with Zeiss, with much fanfare about how successful their collaboration had been…totally side stepping the prior pause(?) in it.

Then last year, there was some supposed announcement of Zeiss exiting lenses for photography, which now appears to have been totally incorrect or at least overstated.

Well, I am quite happy that Zeiss appears to be in the game still. I love their lenses.

The last Loxia, the 25/2.4, was released in Feb 2018; the last Otus, 100/1.4, came in May 2019.

As of the reporting date, Zeiss had 26,945 employees worldwide (prior year: 25,433).

https://www.wileyindustrynews.com/en/news/record-revenue-and-earnings-zeiss-continues-growth-trajectory
(2018 document)

Their total employee count now stands at 42,992 (Sept 2023, Wikipedia).

Perhaps they just needed a short break from photography of ten to twenty years, a kind of long term corporate sabbatical. While they do other things, and look for more optical engineers.

If you like using 35mm, then I think the answer is probably: Yes 35GM is the best lenses for your portrait work.
Due to its designer Okumura, who designed the 20g 24gm and same as 50.4gm probably the 85gm ii.This design seems like do not focus on like breath control or so, but it has very sharp image quality and very impressive weight control. Combining with sony 11 apture blades, it offer you i think the most butter smooth out focus phenomenon.
