Potter's Marsh

This past Sunday morning I spent a couple of hours at Potter's Marsh just outside Anchorage. It's still early season but plenty of activity down there. Plenty of transient waterfowl and a few starting nests. The arctic terns have arrived but aren't nesting yet.

1) Tundra Swan feeding

2) Wigeons seem to be the most numerous ducks

3) Ring necked ducks are uncommon in this area

4) Always trying to find a different shot for common Canada geese

5) 800mm makes a big difference filling the frame with the arctic terns

6) I was waiting for this pintail to swim across a decent BG when a passerby flushed it

7) Northern shoveler has a face that only a mother could love

8) And yet they find romance

9) The swallows are just starting to arrive and not yet occupying the nest boxes

10) There are several pairs of red necked grebes and hopefully some of them will nest here

A well done set of a nice variety. I like the tranquil feel of the setting and warm tones.

Great set, I love #6...very cool capture...

Remember Potters Marsh, I went down there a couple times last September when I was in Alaska...not a lot of action then...but it is a great place to go check out...

Glad you enjoyed the photos, Scott. Surprised myself that I had the presence of mind and was quick enough to capture the pintail when it flushed. Even tracked it for half a dozen frames

Yes most of the birds have left the marsh by September. We usually get a few dozen swans stopping over on the way south but that's about it.

Very nice set Dan. Love the Pintail launching.
Potter's Marsh was our very first stop after we landed in Anchorage. It was pretty ripe with 100's of dead salmon everywhere but after spending nearly 12 hours flying, it was nice to get out there so quickly and click on a few critters. It's nice little wildlife location near the city.
