Yesterday I went to Cir B Bar where I tried to capture this Osprey eating when out of nowhere came another one looking to steal his fish...the moment happened so quickly that I honestly didn't know what to do. I have much to learn and starting with increasing my shutter speed.

Thanks so much for looking and c&c is always welcome.

Carol

Happened so fast...

Nicely done Carol. Don't worry about your SS too much on that last one. Some people like to show a little motion blur to help the dynamics of the image. As long as you nailed the eye and head on your main subject don't fret any motion blur.
I personally don't go there because I almost always mess up my tracking and end up with a blurry eye/face. @morris is really good at this technique. You pulled it off here nicely I think.
They're a little on the hot side so maybe expose a little lower to preserve those highlights and don't push shadows as much.

Nice set and you caught a great moment with the male visiting the female. With the head eaten off the fish, the female is probably getting her turn at the fish after the male brought it to her after eating the head. That's typical osprey behavior.

The white of the head can be tricky and you need to expose for that white patch and then bring the rest of the bird up in post.

Looking at the EXIF for the set it looks like you are using a fixed shutter speed and also aperture. Most people photograph wildlife with wide open or close to it and would chose a faster shutter speed. Don't worry about your ISO as modern cameras can do well at very high ISO and there is also software noise reduction when possible.

My exposer style is to shoot wide open unless I need more DOF. I also set the ISO based on conditions and let my shutter speed float. I then adjust exposure compensation to get the Propper exposure. I adjust my ISO to get the shutter speed into a range that I can produce good results with yet I don't fret over a specific number. I usually want an ISO that will provide a fast enough shutter speed to catch action yet don't go super high as I like some wing blur. If your panning is not up to it, then go for shutter speeds 1/2000 or higher.

I like these B&W's, though I do agree with lighthound's suggestions above about coming in hot on the highlights a little, which is easy to do in B&W. Anytime I shoot birds with any white on them at all in daylight, I dial in -.3 to -.7 exp comp.

Part of birding is getting to know your subject and anticipate their movements; another part is knowing your gear to where its second nature or an extension of your hand, so you don't lose time and you can concentrate on the subject. That just comes naturally with more stick time as I used to say in a past life.

The hardest part is having a good eye and steady hand, and it looks like you have that. Just polish the technique a little and you are there. The guys and gals here will make a birder out of you in no time.

Yes, I see now it is "hot". Thanks for the reminder of the EC ah, the learning curve. Florida's landscape is chaos I have to dial my focus down to find the calm. I've been resisting since I am clueless about the birds but here I go. Thanks for the kind words and support.

Very cool series, Carol! What a neat thing to see--I think you did a fine job documenting it.

The B/W adds a distinct touch I've not seen done with the ospreys before--I think it works well here.
