These are not high paying jobs and I was looking at options like the Tamron 70-300 or the Sony 70-350. What lens would you recomment for SHARPNESS at the long end ot the range and for quality and focus?

this is sony-specific, so you'll get more responses in the sony forum.

it would help to list the camera body you are using, since those two lenses are crop vs. ff

I know you caveated it with the jobs not being high paying, but sports is one of those areas where the gear really does matter. So pick something that can focus quickly and accurately - I've had moments where I went with a third party lens, but they were just slow enough or inaccurate enough to significantly lower my "hit rate". Just my two cents! Of course, we can only acquire what our budgets allow!

As you are trying to keep the cost down. Go used equipment. My recommendation with cost as the first requirement and assuming daytime shoots Canon MKII and a 70-200 F4. If you have to shoot night games 70-200 2.8 non IS.
Just my 2 cents.

Not a bad idea but the ideal lens for me would be a 300 F4 or 400 5.6 but neither is available in e mount. I already have a 80-200but for football, I'd rather have more reach.

There is no cheap way to shoot night HS sports with a Sony. The used market for Sony barely exists (compared to Nikon and Canon) and with Sony you have the 70-200 or 400 @ 2.8. In my area at least, most outdoor HS sports are night or into the night games. Interestingly, I shoot way more D1 sports in the day than HS. And the HS fields are lit to about ISO 8000 and 1/1000 and 2.8. Some are slightly better, but most are about this so you'll need fast glass. Most folks shooting for the newspapers (freelance or newspaper employees) have 2.8 lenses. You simply can't produce high quality work with less. Sony does have the 100-400 5.6, but it'd be darn near useless for night action. You can shoot football with a 70-200. You'll just need to follow the action up and down the sideline, anticipate the plays and only shoot stuff near you that fills the frame.

I use a Sigma 120-300 2.8 (canon mount) and an MC-11 adapter. Keeps up pretty well. It would probably be better on a native body, but I still get a high ratio of keepers.
