Monochrome?

p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Monochrome?

I just noticed my D700 does monochrome in camera. Does any other Nikon body do this? It is converted to 850 NM IR so is no good for visible light. My D800 and Z7 apparently do not. Was the D700 a one off doing monochrome?

- How did you notice this? Not via Shooting Menu -> Set Picture Control?
- What's in that menu in D800 and Z7?

The D700 has an actual monochrome setting in Picture Control. D800 no. Z7 no. I thought of this after I ran across a story about monochrome and an outfit that does monochrome conversions. Now, the bodies I checked have monochrome conversion in the touch up menu but not in pre photo settings.

ETA: I saw several Nikon bodies listed and that piqued my curiosity.

My Z7 has a monochrome picture control- as does my Z6 and Zfc. The online Z7II lists a monochrome picture control
here as does the online manual for the D800. All of these only apply to jpegs, of course.

To be sure none of these controls are the same as what maximax.com does when they modify the sensor.

I think we are all just a bit flummoxed that you haven't seen this before.

They do in the retouch menu, Some allow capturing monochrome.

Non of Nikon bodies has native monochrome since you cannot bypass bayer filter.
Monochrome setting in picture control is not native monochrome.

I had D500, D850, D6, D810, as far as I remember, they all have monochrome in picture control.
My local dealer even made a few extra monochrome preset that I can install into picture control in my camera if I want.

Z7 ii, Z9, Z Fc also has this.

Monochrome conversion by third party is entirely different. They take out bayer filter for one thing.
This is similar to what Leica Monochrome, the new Pentax monochrome of Phase One Monochrome camera does and
is the only native monochrome cameras.

On Nikon body, you can shoot in any picture control profile and convert to various monochrome profiles in post processing
and you are not losing anything in comparison to using monochrome profile in picture control.

as to native use of MC in the D700 it is identical to all the other non modified standard Nikon bodies

all have essentially the same in camera controls

so, in the end pretty much all of the bodies are capable of producing in camera monochome based image just not by using a "native" monochrome base sensor. and that goes for the D700 and Z7 unmodded body.

all images here are quicky BW images produced as in camera MC JPG's done early this morning. no style no grace
