What indoor sports need f/2? I guess there are still some really dingy gyms out there. Or you just want to blur out the background more? (which AI subject/background selection can do very effectively)
The downside of a 70-200/2 necessarily being similar diameter to the 100-300 is that it would simply be very large for day-long events where you're running around a lot, like weddings, etc. This is why I've long asked for an XX-135/2 instead, because it should be doable in the size of a conventional 70-200/2.8 (maybe slightly larger diameter). For me at least, the 28-70/2 paired with such a lens would cover the vast majority of my event coverage needs.
For indoor sports (and I shoot that too), I'd rather do the 24-105/2.8 and 100-300 combo. But that's me.
If Canon made a XX-135/2, it would leave room for a 200/2 or 200/1.8 prime. For that they should basically copy the Sony 300/2.8 concept by making it as light/compact as possible. Not making it a zoom would save a lot of weight/complexity/size and it would be very hand-holdable. Or Canon could go crazy and make it a 200/1.4 since it would 'only' be the diameter of a 400/2.8. Make it TC compatible and now you have the options of 280/2 and 400/2.8. I have a difficult time thinking of a rational application for a 200/1.4 other than bokeh photos (perhaps astro?), but it sure would be one heck of a halo lens. ...Show more →
Shooting Basketball and gymnastics in poor dark lit high school gyms require lots of light. At times I have to use my 50mm 1.4 or 85mm 1.4 lens to have enough light for basketball. I agree prime lenses will be lighter but you cannot beat the versality of a zoom. Most will prefer a heavier 100-300mm 2.8 over a 300mm 2.8 prime. I owned the Canon 300mm 2.8 IS which is a great lens but I find it limiting when shooting sports where the action is coming toward me. I cannot zoom out with a prime but with a 100-300 I can keep shooting. I agree not many photographers will want to log a 5.6 pounds lens with him all day, in that case a 70-150mm F2 will be remarkably lighter compared to a 70-200 F2. I would not mind having both, please Canon introduce a 70-150mm F2 and 70-200mm F2.
