What indoor sports need f/2? I guess there are still some really dingy gyms out there. Or you just want to blur out the background more? (which AI subject/background selection can do very effectively)

The downside of a 70-200/2 necessarily being similar diameter to the 100-300 is that it would simply be very large for day-long events where you're running around a lot, like weddings, etc. This is why I've long asked for an XX-135/2 instead, because it should be doable in the size of a conventional 70-200/2.8 (maybe slightly larger diameter). For me at least, the 28-70/2 paired with

Shooting Basketball and gymnastics in poor dark lit high school gyms require lots of light. At times I have to use my 50mm 1.4 or 85mm 1.4 lens to have enough light for basketball. I agree prime lenses will be lighter but you cannot beat the versality of a zoom. Most will prefer a heavier 100-300mm 2.8 over a 300mm 2.8 prime. I owned the Canon 300mm 2.8 IS which is a great lens but I find it limiting when shooting sports where the action is coming toward me. I cannot zoom out with a prime but with a 100-300 I can keep shooting. I agree not many photographers will want to log a 5.6 pounds lens with him all day, in that case a 70-150mm F2 will be remarkably lighter compared to a 70-200 F2. I would not mind having both, please Canon introduce a 70-150mm F2 and 70-200mm F2.

A 70-200 f/2 would be an amazing portrait and sports lens, I would love one. After buying the 100-300, I'm wondering what Canon could achieve with a 300-600L and a built in 1.4x. Would it be possible to make something like a 300-600 f/3.5-5.0 for a similar weight/size of the 100-300? That with a flickable 1.4x would be amazing if it's possible.

No need to sell me on the versatility of zooms. I gave up long primes as soon as the 200-400 became available. Let's just hope the rumored 200-500/4 has a built-in 1.4x TC. The brief time I had with the 100-300, it really impressed me, except the lack of internal TC (because I'm so used to it with the 200-400). This could be somewhat offset by a decent ~50MP action camera (perhaps R5II) for greater cropping flexibility.

Canon has a lot of small lenses with autofocus (16 f2.8) and reasonably sized lenses with both autofocus and IS (35 f1.8), so I don't think manual focus is that big of a size driver.

They could be. But any outer constraint, as AF and IS, will limit the optical design. Both the AF and the IS elements should be comparably small and preferably in one easily mobilized package, each. The design of an MF lens do not have these limitations in addition to the optical challenges, which are huge. It is thus largely a question about balancing the lens speed vs size with the manufacturability of the design and the price. Faith, Hope and Love and largest among them is Profit.

The rumored 200-500mm F4 IS is very close to your desired 300-600mm F5 lens. I would prefer the 200-500 for the fix aperture. Also Canon does not want to cannibalize the RF600mm F4 IS with a 300-600mm F5 lens.

The 200-500 f/4 is nice but often 500mm is too short. If it has a built in TC then okay. But if not, I don't think a 300-600 would cannibalize the 600 f/4 because it would be a pricey L too. And they can't worry much about cannibalizing anymore when the competition is pumping out a lot of glass. Canon has their cheap line filled out and now they need to start filling in the gaps.

What is your intended use for the 300-600? To me it sounds more like a wildlife lens, while for sports its wide end would be longer than I would like. I'm not going to shoot field sports with a 100-300 on one camera and a 300-600 on the other, though I guess I could use a 70-200 (but the Canon RFs aren't TC compatible to bridge the 200-300 gap, which I'm often in with the 200-400). So for me, 200-500/4 would be a better range and 700/5.6 with a TC would be very nice for daytime and/or well lit venues.

I could see a variable aperture 300-600/3.5-5.0 do really well for birding/wildlife because with a TC (even better if internal), it could provide a lot more flexibility than a fixed 800/6.3 that's all the rage in another system. But it would have to have competitive image quality and pricing.

The 300-600 would be for wildlife. Basically a better version of Sony's 200-600 with more focus on the long end with faster apertures.

For sports, agree the 200-500 f/4 would be better.

Tiny 50mm & 35mm f1.4 manual focus lenses. Like the Leica Summiluxes. It's so liberating and creative shooting adapted manual focus lenses on the R cameras, but most are vintage glass and albeit full of character lack the sharpness and quality of rendering of a modern lens. The RF 50 1.2 is a phenomenal lens, but its heft and size make it less than optimal for street photography or carrying along when hiking.

Just allow Sigma, Tamron, Samyang and the new Chinese manufacturers to make lenses in RF mount, and Canon may never bother to make a lens anymore for all I care.

Hopefully we'll see more of the Voigtlander lenses available in RF mount, such as the 35/2 and 50/2 APO-Lanthars, which are thoroughly modern.

Apparently in an interview conducted with a French publication at CP+, a Canon executive reveals that the company is aware of the market pressure around this and is "communicating a lot more" with third party lens manufacturers.

https://www.canonrumors.com/canon-executive-interview-at-cp-2024/

It probably means nothing for this year, but I suspect eventually Canon will have to shift its strategy. Otherwise, they are just handing Sony and Nikon cheap wins.

Why?

If Canon went this route, hopefully it would at least have AF. You can soon buy the Voigtlander 50/1.0 in RF mount.

Other- Tamron and Sigma lenses that already exist on other mounts....
Canon has only made two RF lenses that interest me- the 16/2.8 (awesome, cheap, tiny) and 50/1.8 (good, cheap, tiny). Tamron and Sigma both have a ton of exciting lenses for reasonable prices. Most of the "affordable" RF lenses are snoozefests, and the fast/exciting ones start at $3k...

I would love to pair some small and fast (or at least stabilized) primes with an R8 without paying an arm and a leg.
