I used my Z9 and D5 to shoot Lacrosse games. For my style of shooting, a 400mm length may be effective for 20-40% of the action, for the rest it would likely be too close up/too tight for the action, especially near goal area. I use my 70-200 for anything else. Two examples, first is D5, 2nd is Z9, both at ISO 5000.

If it is a daytime game my advice is 1/200 or 1/3200 shutter speed. f2.8, ISO what it needs to be.

Follow the ball and be sure you have the ball and a face of the person with the ball in your photos.

It is a fast moving sport and if you get hit by a ball it hurts. In many places they won't let you stand behind the net even though I think that is the best place to be. Don't argue with the refs if they tell you to move or anything else. Just do it or you may be told to leave.

400mm is a lot of lens when they get close to you. If you have two cameras one with the 400 and one with a 70-200 is a good combo.

For me the best shot is a player taking a shot on goal with the goalie and net in the photo kind of like the second one above. It is more difficult than you think to get the ball in the air after a shot. It moves very quickly so many FPS is a benefit.

Have fun. LAX is one of my favorite sports to shoot. I hope you enjoy it.

Regardless of the camera brand or focal length
My personal advice would be:-

Shoot wide open
Select continuous auto focus (I only ever use centre AF point)
Use a high shutter speed (1/800 minimum)

(Those factors will determine your iso setting)

Shoot JPEG’s

Predict/anticipate what’s coming !!
if you see it, you missed it.

When I first started I only used single shot, but watched closely what was happening.

Spray and pray is not for me.

Once you’ve established you’ve got the exposure pretty right - after a dozen shots.

Stop checking the rear screen (chimping) concentrate 100% on what’s happening in the viewfinder.

Oh, and make sure your batteries are fully charged 😂

Don't position yourself anywhere behind the goal, a lacrosse ball WILL find you.
