The one important difference between the A9 and A9ii that I don't see mentioned here:
The A9 has a 30 minute video recording limit.
The A9ii has no limit on the duration of video recorded.

I’ve recently heard that the A9ll has better dynamic range. Can someone confirm this? Is it something that can be seen on on screen samples from the two cameras?

Thanks,
JayT

I have both, only use them for photos, and the biggest differences I notice are the design of rhe body and the shutter sound. I LOVE the shutter sound of the A9II, when I have to shoot mech shutter its a nice/non clacky piercing sound. And the body design of the 9II feels a bit better, nice bumpy button instead of joystick, larger grip etc
Performance wise I dont notice a difference 🤷‍♂️

I have shot less than 1% of my A9 pictures with mechanical shutter. Or perhaps 0,1% is closer to reality The original A9 mechanical shutter is miserable, but does the job. I change to mech shutter only if I really need to.

I was waiting for A9III as an upgrade, but since it is global shutter and only 24mpx I see no point. Now I am considering to upgrade to A9II for better haptics (mechanical shutter is another reason, although a minor one).

From memory I went A9 to Version II and mainly for LED shooting with variable shutter and anti flicker. I shoot a lot of LED lighting bonus was bigger buttons and just ergo felt a lot better. I did not worry about costs on these type of upgrades and most comments negatively will by about costs. This was worth the upgrade for me.

Agree with you. A9ii was worth the upgrade over the original A9 . I had the original A9 for a couple of months, and after holding the A9ii in hand at my local hunts photo, it felt much better to me. The button changes also pushed me to upgrade. I traded up on the spot

The ergonomics of the A9II over the A9 were worth every penny to me. I only paid about $1300 CAD to upgrade.
The A9II is also less laggy to switch to EVF...and does everything a bit faster as it has an upgraded processor.

But if you are used to the ergo of your A7III/RIII then that will be identical to the A9 size and buttons (with the addition of the A9's drive mode dial).

I added RSS grips to my A9 and my A7RIV. They are equally comfortable to me. A9 is such an amazing bargain right now. Unless you can get A9II for a couple of hundred more than A9, I don't think it is worth it.

I think the a9 makes a much better walk around or personal use camera with the smaller body. If that is primary use I'd go a9. The a9ii is what I would pick if you're actually using bigger GM lenses or doing pro work, it becomes much more worthwhile with the bigger size, better buttons, shutter dust cover, and anti flicker. I almost always grabbed my a9 when I had both because I preferred the smaller size, unless I was doing pro work or using big lenses.

I have the a9 and A7rv and I don’t find either ergonomics much better. The lcd screen of the a7r5 is better but the buttons are almost the same.

My opinion… unless u need some of the weird network function of a9ii, there is zero reason to pay many hundreds more for a9ii.

Well I guess we are free to disagree correct? I feel the small changes (improved dynamic range, grip, buttons, weather sealing, overall more responsive camera ) are all easily worth the extra money over the original A9

I thought it was a good enough of an upgrade that, at the time, I upgraded both of my a9's to a9II's. They since been replaced by A1's, but I never thought I didn't get my money's worth on the upgrade.

Shooting continuous and uncompressed...
A9 - 12 bit
A9II - 14 bit
...if you care about that sort of thing.

I kind of agree. I got my A9II for a good price, and I kept the A9 too. I wouldn’t replace it with a new A9II, at its price. The few differences I see, TO ME, aren’t worth the thousands of dollar’s upgrade (over 6k for me)

One key difference is that the A92 has the anti-flicker feature, which the OG A9 does not. That might be important to you if you shoot indoors a lot. Other than that I'd consider the differences pretty minor -- slightly better AF on the A92 perhaps, slightly tweaked DR and EVF response, plus the wifi upgrade etc.

It's not just indoors. Think poorly lit HS Football stadiums lit by flickering in color and intensity lights. Every little bit helps. My local county HS's have converted to LEDs which help, but outlying counties have not.

Its really painful with stage lighting as almost all of it turned to LED as for many reasons cost savings, Runs extremely cooler in degrees, you can place these lights right on a black background material not to mention lighter to transport and other factors. BUT we as shooters need the tools to avoid the banding. The A9II A1 will do that effectively and the A7RV can in mechnical shutter but a little harder to control.

Global shutter is a dream. I'm just too lazy to get a new camera.
Looking at my old images - 24mb Canons shots or iPhone 6/6s looks just fine resolution wise...
