This week Pentax released a monochrome camera:

Interesting! I went from Pentax to Sony but a real monochrome camera could be something that makes me buy one more Pentax Kamera. In combination with a lovely limited lens for sure promising.

Anyone who‘s preordered or will? Any thoughts on it?

I have the Leica M10M and enjoy it. This K3 III-M could be a great stand alone platform even though you have Sony now. Pentax has such a storied tradition and is a classic brand.

Yes, I find it pretty exciting. And it‘s good to see that not only Leica is offering something in that direction.

I think it makes a lot of sense that the two brands most committed to the optical viewfinder now both have monochrome cameras.

My only regret about the Pentax is the APS-C, not because of image quality, but because of great classic K-mount lenses were built on FF. I want the 40mm pancake to be a 40mm perspective!

I was wondering if anyone has the new Pentax Monochrome and how they like it? I'm thinking of getting it. I've only had Canons the last few years and I've wanted a Leica monochrome, but the price is just ridiculous. This is my first chance to get a good quality monochrome camera. I'm willing to get 1-3 lenses that would work on it, and if I really like the camera, when my 2 Canons wear out, switch to Pentax FF color cameras. So I think I want to get the right lenses from the start, meaning FF lenses and just deal with the 1.6 crop. I had to do this with my first Canon and it wasn't a big deal.

I know that Canon lists their lenses by contemporary lenses and "L" lenses. Is there any key to Pentax lenses like this? Are there any special lenses that I should get that are much better than the rest? I just need a wide angle, mid range, and a medium long-range like maybe up to 180 or 200 mm. I prefer prime lenses, but I'll get any lens, Pentax or other, that works on a K mount that is really exceptional.

Thanks. Bill

For Pentax, the ‘limited’ lenses are the gold standard. They have them in FF and APS-c format. Unfortunately, for my taste, none give me a desirable focal length on an APS-c camera, but they are sweet lenses in the best Pentax tradition, I.e. excellent and small.

If Pentax lenses aren't as good as other brand names, then I already found that other brands make lenses for Pentax, though in a limited number. I believe Sigma makes a few lenses for the Pentax and I have a couple of Sigma lenses for my Canon cameras because they're just excellent all around. Do you think the Pentax Limited are not as good as a Sigma Art?

Pentax uses a ★ (star) in the names of the premium lenses where size is a secondary consideration. They also have the "Limited" line which is premium in a different way. There size, look and handling is a priority but also a subjective look to the rendering. Usually Limiteds also have rather expensive optical formulas but designed to be small. Crudely put star lenses are Canon L equivalents, Limiteds are Leica M equivalents.

star lens microsite: https://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/products/star_lens/
limited lens microsite: https://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/products/limited_lens/

A long lens name may look like this and the order has been the same back to the 70's
HD PENTAX-D FA 21mm F2.4ED Limited DC WR

Pentax lens names start with the main generation of coating. SMC or HD
The letters after "Pentax" signify the sensor type they were designed for. DA is digital apsc, -D FA is digital FF, FA is autofocus film.

I we go all the way back in history: F is the same as FA but different build, A is automatic aperture, M is miniaturized lenses for film, lenses with no designation between "Pentax" and focal length are the original K mount lenses. After the aperture a multitude of various designations for lens motors, weather protection, glass types etc can be found.

The Sigma Art lenses I have tried were too clinical for me, but this was pretty long ago. I liked the Pentax Limited lenses better. I used to have three, but moved away from Pentax because I wanted FF but didn’t like their K1 (just didn’t feel well in my hand).
