It is very minimal, I guess on a R3 it will not even be visible at all. Stopping down to 7.1 I would say they are equal. With the 1.4x the 100-300 is definitely sharper wide open.
If you have the opportunity, try renting one.
I have tried it, it was not a no-brainer, but still I have had one on order, it's arriving today at the dealer and I will be picking it up tomorrow.
It is not an easy call for me to splurge on this lens (have the 100-500 / 400 2.8RF & a 300 f2.8 IS V1 closet queen). But with my son now doing track, and I becoming the "unofficial" official team photographer, it was time to bite the bullet. I plan on traveling "light" to Alaska this summer, taking 24-105F4 & 100-300+2x on R5x2. It reduces a 3-lens 2-body kit to a 2-body 2 lens kit. For wildlife, I expect the 2x to be permanently attached and sincerely hope that the 1x-2x becomes real and becomes available around summer, that would make it an incredible combo. As much as I have enjoyed the 400 RF for the past year, there are too many situations that I kept wishing for flexibility of the Zoom in changing situations. I will report back later this year on how this combo worked out for Alaska Bears and all.
