p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Tips on Ring Photography for Wedding

Hello all,

My name is Todd and I've been doing professional photography for about 10 years now. But I have actually never shot any weddings. I am about to shoot my first wedding and I wanted to ask if anyone has any experience shooting engagement/wedding rings to make them really pop and look their best. Are there any tools you use, whether in pre or post, that you find beneficial to really make the diamond pop?
The bride was very kind to send me the link to the ring so I could understand the dimensions to work with, please see below:
https://connuit.com/collections/hidden-halo/products/halo-ring-oval?variant=40507192737861

Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks all,

Todd.

You're talking about ring Macro photography, do it all the time as a standard for our weddings. To make the diamond pop you'll want it cleaned beforehand and you'll want to keep it completely clean through out. There's no software tool that can replicate that level of detail. If you're not familiar with macro photography, there's a macro forum here with a ton of talent.

I like small LED lights for a look. LumeCube, iPhone flashlight.

Been shooting weddings full time for 18+ years and believe it or not, I prefer natural light for ring shots. All were done without any external light source and non-macro lenses:

If you are going to shoot rings... get in there and get in tight. Extensions rings don't cut it for me.
An occasional one (last one) like what gheller has shown is good for the story aspect.

me... prefer the 100L on the canon mount for doing ring shots.
natural light, on top of granite, in glass of water, back lite with flash.... really it is up to you.
I have done them all and more. In M&M, in shoes, on shoes, on railings, on art work, old cars.....

Some shooters try to half a*s it... and it shows.
Meaning with extension rings and not getting in close. we need to see the diamond!!

Even if the brides does not get it cleaned... gently running some water (champagne will work) over it will do.
I generally have the bride do this.

Note: when you have the brides ring, be mindful and aware of it.
don't be scared.... just respect the ring, get your shot and deliver it back.

I find I dont have the time to properly set up a macro type shot. I often incorporate the ring(s) into her shoes or flowers or a trinket they’ve included for the wedding. Sometimes a fence….whatever works for me.

Extension tube for ring shots. Careful tho, I once had an engagement ring shot so close up that it was revealed to be cubic zirconium
I hope the bride was aware before I was...

Compose, get close as possible (lens depending) shoot at f5.6 or more. Take a few variations. Pick the best one. Dont waste a lot of time on it, people photos mean more.

What has worked well for me was to carry a 77mm +4 closeup lens that I thread onto a 24-70mm lens. It takes the place of a dedicated macro lens and when not used this filter fits inside a pocket on my bag and takes up very little space.

I personally stopped doing ring shots because I don't think most of our couples actually cared about them, they took too much of my time on the wedding day, and they're just annoying to shoot in general. I don't mind integrating rings into a flat-lay, but my days of shooting rings with a 100mm macro are gone. No thanks.

I still do them if I have the time, but agree they really aren't important. But I've brides in the past complain when then didn't get any.

I did my niece's wedding, just a JP and small reception. I asked to do a ring shot but his hand looked liked it went through a lawn mower. Got the shot a couple weeks later with lots of make up.
