I'm pleased that the veiling flare continues to be present, as it's a character I appreciate from this lens.

I do not disagree, but thought that I would dissent, by mentioning that I bought my (pre-owned) Leica Summilux-M 50mm ASPH, along with a new M10, and my new Nikon F-mount Zeiss Otus 85mm f/1.4 ZF.2, on the same April day, in 2018, for entirely different forms of “high” performance. That was the day I added the Leica M system.

I scuttled plans to add a very expensive Nikon Nikkor 600mm f/4 “super-telephoto” lens, to instead buy into the Leica M system, and add a different-grail-quest Nikon-mount Zeiss lens, for less than I would have spent on the huge 600mm telephoto.

I already had a superbly high-performing lens in the “normal” focal length range, a Micro-Nikkor AF-S 60mm f/2.8G.

So, the planets aligned, perfectly, for adding an M lens that I knew to be imperfectly-corrected, optically. Life can be beautiful.

I still do not know whether to be interested in adding the newer Summilux ASPH II, with closer-focus. My APO Summicron-M 75mm ASPH has a magnification factor, at 0.7m, that closely matches the closer-focus 50mm ASPH II at its closer MFD. Someone who does not yet own a Summilux-M 50mm ASPH, should, of course, consider opting for the closer-focusing II.

I just finished watching Alex Barrera's comp mention above



Needless to say, it is slightly improved, mainly the shorter focusing distance and the corner sharpness, but I am still impressed how well the old one is holding up.

Thanks for posting this link. I do see how the pre-II ASPH’s red ring flare is, instead, more of a rainbow ring flare, with the ASPH II. I can see preferring one, or the other, as being a deciding factor. In the conditions shown in the test images, I think that I prefer the rainbow flare, but, I have not tried to use the red ring, creatively, so, am not sure I would, necessarily, start liking the appearance of the more-rainbow ring, when viewing my images normally, rather than magnified.

The improved corners could, certainly, be a reason to upgrade, for those who require or prefer better corner performance.

The bokeh performance, as seen in the presentation’s OOF “bokeh balls,” appears to be of little consequence. Of course, there is more to background blur than just “bokeh balls.”

I am not quite yet seeing enough to start a campaign to buy an ASPH II, but, I will be paying attention to posted images.
