I’ve decided that I’d like to add a Leica to compliment my Fuji XS10. I’ve been looking very hard at the Q2/Q2M/Q3. I’ll probably need to go used but I may go new. Maybe. It’ll take me some time to save but I’m lusting after the look, history, build quality and simplicity of the Leica line.

Besides the Q, can anyone recommend a digital Leica that can be had around Q prices or less, is good for a beginner to pick up and learn on, and has a selection of lenses that can be had that are quality but one doesn’t have to spend tons on.

Thank you guys.

Rich

The digital Leicas are all expensive, even the the older ones; the old film ones are more affordable but then you have to deal with the price of film and processing. If I went with digital I'd probably get the M262 (see extensive review here: https://gear.vogelius.se/-editorials/leica-m262/index.html) but even that's still surprisingly expensive on the used market.

I haven't checked peices lately but with the M 11 out the prices of used M 10s and M 10p's have probably gotten more affordable. That and a Voigtlander or Zeiss lens?

Yeah it's kinda funny how the M 262 which was a less expensive and less gadget heavy camera than the M 240 has held its value so well. I got a really good price for mine when I sold it to help finance my M 10 Mono. Great camera.

What is your favorite focal length? I think that should be considered on Q vs M. I prefer 50mm, so the Q felt too restrictive for me.

I considered M240, M10, and M10R and ended up going with a used M10. They are currently are about the same price as a used Q2 on FM. I would suggest buying or renting a few focal lengths with either Voigtlander or Zeiss lenses as you explore what you like. Then considering buying a Leica lens in your favorite focal length. I find my 50 Summicron is on my M10 ~90% of the time.

I keep going out with my 18-55 and leaving it on certain focal lengths. I’m finding myself choosing 35 and 50 a lot. I sometimes crop those too but I think that’s a matter of me not being great at composing yet. That’ll come. I’ve left it on 27mm a bunch too and like it but often like to see less unless it’s a landscape.

So far I’m really enjoying street most. 35 and 50 work well there.

Leica M10 and the Voigtlander 28mm Ultron Classic II.

Incredible setup! Small, lightweight, stellar image quality and a great introduction to M bodies/lenses.

Buying a Q/Q2/Q3 has many benefits but the shooting style is really the same as your S10. Its an autofocus camera where how you use it and the workflow is basically the same.

The M body is just a different experience that can't be replicated by anything but an M camera.

I see there’s a P and an R etc etc. are either of those a smarter choice? Rangefinder sounds like it’s not too difficult to get used to.

They can take time and patients to fully master. The P has a quieter shutter and a touch screen that the M 10 doesn't have and the R has a 40mps. The M 1os shutter is by no means loud but both the R and the P are quieter as is the M 10 mono. I have 2M10s and an M 10 Mono. If I were to buy a used M 10 series I would probably go for the R if price was no option but the M 10 or the M 10p are both great choices.

Here are a couple of great photographers on the M and reason to choose it.

Meyerowitz and about 1:20 in to point. Good peice if you haven't seen it beyond the rangefinder point.

and Alan Schaller

Thank you! I see KEH has a P model for around $5k. A Q2 as well. R is like $6200. Getting up there without a lens. But we will see.

I just watched that first video and it’s very compelling.

Cheapest is in the forums. Seen them on other shops used. Q2 being like $3800-4800 used

M10R like $5500-6200

Digital CL can be had for under $2k (often including a TL kit lens or M to L adapter). It’s an APS-C EVF camera, so not full frame or a rangefinder, but the L mount allows the opportunity to use TL or L mount lenses with AF capability or any manual focus LTM or M glass with the M to L adapter. Consider it a gateway drug into Leica.

I would first decide between mono and color. Second decision is fixed 28 mm vs. interchangeable lenses.

In the mono world ...

... the Q2M is a great camera. If a fixed 28 mm is too much of a challenge, don't dismiss the M246. A 24 mp mono sensor is still very current today. And while M lenses can be expensive, there are plenty of older lenses that don't break the bank. The only tradeoff is a bit more character, but a lot of that character can look absolutely amazing on a mono sensor.

I bought a used Q2 for $4000 a year ago and then shortly there after I bought a mint M10-R on FM for $5500. I went through many of the same thoughts as you in trying to decide what to get. The M10-P was high on my list but when the M10-R came along, I could not resist. I rarely use the Q2 now, in favor of the M10-R. Like someone else mentioned, the Q2 experience will be much the same as what you get now with Fuji. My recommendation is the M10-P or R if you can fit it in your budget. Once you get used to manual focus with a RF it is liberating and in many ways, faster than AF.

Keep an eye on FM. You can get a Voightlander (28/2 or 50/1.5) lens in the beginning to save some cash, the Voigtlander lenses are a bargain IMHO. Check CameraQuest for their used stock which are in mint condition. Good luck and have fun!

I’m not sure I can stretch to the R but I’ll certainly try. It sounds fantastic. I’ll definitely keep the Q2 at the top despite working the same. I like how simple and basic it is and the lens seems amazing.

As far as mono, I’ve thought about it a lot and it’s a tough call. My Fuji can do the colors and the q2 could do mono I suppose and that might be cool. But the color pics I see from the Leica line are so good too.

I debated getting a mono version also, and I still might get a mono M10, but the reality is at least for me, the Mono profiles in the Q2 and M10-R are already quite good and I would miss color too much. The color science of the Leica is very nice, I really like the rendering. Keep in mind that the lens on the Q2, while amazing, is rather large in comparison to many of the lenses for the M10's.

Yes except I bought the MC (Multi Coating) version which is out of stock at B&H. I buy all of my Voigtlander lenses from Stephen at CameraQuest. If you keep an eye on his used stock, you can get an even better price. He ships via next day USPS and no tax. He can also answer any question you might have. I bought the "Panda" version of this lens just for something different. My copy is very sharp. I also use MFT so I use my LM lenses on my Olympus bodies as well. Here is the link to the Panda MC version, Black is also in stock.
