It was a lot of fun shooting these venomous, tiny, and gorgeous eyelash viper snakes at night during our recent trip to Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica...

Shot with Sony A1, 90mm macro, and a single Godox flash in a small softbox handheld off camera...

Thanks a lot KD. Yes, interestingly we had actually scheduled this for early morning but because of an unfortunate flight cancellation and rebooking, our trip got shorter by two days and we had to reschedule this for night time. And I am so glad we did!

Great stuff! I hope these are cropped, A LOT, using that 90mm I cringe to think how close you had to be, heh heh.

These are great shots. I can appreciate the challenges involved in taking this images in the wild at night. Specially with a dangerous subject.

Excellent work! I tend to stay away from snakes as I've been bitten and don't want a repeat, even from a non venomous snake. Great that you can get close and take wonderful image.

Love the shots !! Snakes make me nervous and in the dark terrified I would imagine. First one seems to have more coloring, any idea why ?

Thank you Eric... I was actually pretty close, but I was with a local guide as well as a professional snake wrangler. So I guess I had some -maybe false- sense of safety

All it would take would be for the snake to make a jump at me from the branch, and luckily it never happened

Thanks Morris... I guess I felt a bit safer (maybe wrongly so!) as there was a professional snake wrangler with us who supposedly understood the snake behavior very well...

Thanks John... I am no expert on snakes and so have no idea on coloring. That said, if you look online for eyelash viper snakes, they do seem to come in a few different colors and patterns...

Thanks Greg... Yeah, I am happy we did this at night. Got some cool shots, not just of snakes, but also of frogs, and various small critters and insects...

These are terrific shots of pretty lethal looking vipers. You are very brave, especially to photograph them at night with a 90mm macro! I'm glad you did it so I can see, but I'd never be brave enough to do it. I did photograph a black mamba recently, but from what I think was a safe distance.

love these, Kambiz, the F14 on your macro lense is really providing a lot more DOF than my Canon 100 mm lense. I also see that you are really careful about lining up a lot more of the snake's body in the DOF, not just the head and the eyes. really good composition on all of these.
