This American Oystercatcher was feeding on a little sand crab at Nickerson Beach, Long Island, NY.

Top notch as always Morris. Curious, what time of day was this? Your white balance is always so spot on, and colors just right, not blasted like could easily happen with that bright reddish orange, just curious if you compensate much in post or ?

Nice images Morris. Love the low level perspective. I hope you got all the sand out of your clothing. As above your exposures are spot on and the white balance perfect.

Very well done Morris. I love the seaweed and foam elements, also the contrast of orange and black. Do they leg band a lot of these ?

Thank you Eric,

The photo was taken at 4:11pm EDT. I usually get my exposures correct in camera and will do things like protect the whites for birds like eagles and osprey and then bring up the shadows as I convert. For American Oystercatchers I find my camera has enough dynamic range to show detail in both the whites and dark feathers so I don't have to bring up the shadows. I always shoot RAW and auto white balance. While Fuji cameras do a good job at this like every brand there are times when they get it wrong so I'll change the white balance as I convert. Fuji cameras have what's called Film Simulations which let us chose a digital film with the properties we want. The Film Sim I usually use is the default which has very natural colors. In this case I left the colors as is, sometimes I'll add a little vibrancy and/or saturation to taste.

Thank you Dave,

Most of the sand usually falls off as I walk off the beach though it it's damp I brush it off. I also shake the sand out of my shoes as I get into the car or on a bench on the way to the car. I always have paper towels in my tripod bag to get the sand off the feet.

Thank you John,

Sometimes the seaweed can be a distraction yet I was able to work them in the composition and I agree the foam is a plus. There are a number of biologists that do research at Nickerson Beach with some of them using there own bands so it's not uncommon to see birds at this beach with as many as 3 bands.

Thank you Greg,

I'm enjoying being able to get down low again after begin very carful of my neck after some pinched nerves. I'm glad to have that behind me.
