the grain isn't too bad.

was it shot in raw? dxo prime is xlnt noise-reduction software, but the biggest problem by far is that it's front-focused.

Grain seems fine, the issue would mostly be that player 17 is in focus while the shooter or goalie aren't.

So you're saying that 17 is in focus but the Goalie is not...

I was using the AI focus setting and a broad range of focus points...so I think it picked up on 17 and not the right part of the image... I've had more success with AI Servo

There are a number of issues with this photo besides it being out of focus. There are no faces, all back sides, it's cluttered, the horizon is tilted...to name a few.

Don't take this wrong way but there are multiple issues with the shot BESIDES sharpness....

At ISO 2500...you need NR for sure and some post sharpening...

I agree with the other comments. This isn't really a keeper for those reasons. The 5DIII is a capable sports camera but take control of the focus. I shot with one for a few years. Even the most modern AF will jump around if you give it control of a scene like this. If you were hoping to get a shot of the goalie (and her save), your timing was spot on but the focus point let you down. The focus should have been pasted to her uniform number...it has good contrast and is generally in the same focal plane as her face.
Some general sports shooting suggestions:
-get the action
-get the ball in the shot
-Get faces
-shoot tight.
You got the first two but missed the last two.
Those rules can be broken and you can still end up with a great shot but that is a good starting point. I hope that helps.

Agree with the comments already made. When you let the camera pick the object of its focus it may pick the player you might like but not reliably. If you had set on single point focus you would likely have gotten the player you wanted. The camera is generally going to pick the closest player in the frame. In my opinion single point focus isn't any riskier to you to use than the broad range of focus points. Single point or single point with some assist points around it would have gotten you a player closer to the goalie if not the goalie. 17 appears sharp on my monitor.

+1.

There are very good lacrosse shooters on the forum. Look them up and see how they do it.

Without question, use a single focal point and become adept at keeping it on the intended target. There is no silver bullet solution, it comes from a lot of practice. No mention on the amount of crop which can also degrade IQ. Shooting in jpeg limits post editing vs raw. Shutter is on the low side, I would bump the ISO to maintain 1/1000.
