Looks like Samyang will be launching a 35-150mm f/2.0-2.8, so mirror Tamron's design? Super odd if you ask me.
Makes you really wonder how patents work these days, especially since Samyang's presence is small. I'm not sure how well their 24-70/2.8 caught on for example.

I think that's because it was their first zoom and it turned out their parfocal claims were a bit suspect. Their recent AF primes are pretty popular.

FWIW: Samyang produced several AF zooms in the 1990's. They have those lenses in display cases in at least one of their buildings, but their marketing doesn't acknowledge them. One of those was a 35-135mm F3.5-4.5 zoom. https://www.ebay.com/itm/184714793167

Their 24-70 was also too heavy for today's standards-heavier than the first GM and Sigma Art yet came well after those.

If Samyang duplicates the optical design, then I can see a patent issue, but surely you can’t patent the range of a lens or we’d only have one lens of any focal length.

My Tamron 35-150mm is really sharp across the frame (compares well to my GM 70-200mm f2.8 II) and is amazingly well corrected for CA's LoCA'S and coma, not to mention good flare characteristics. Samyang has some big shoes to fill, IMHO.

I would bet the Samyang version will be much cheaper with close to the same image quality. Their latest 85 1.4 and 135 1.8 are amazing value.

I have been waiting for Samyang to release a lens that could interest me, it looks like this won't be yet the case :-).
While their 135mm 1.8 AF looks excellent, I am not interested by a prime with this focal.
Let see if they will end up one day upgrading their 14mm optical formula for Astro photographers who need wider than their 24mm (maybe this could interest me as, while Sony 14mm lens is really great, I don't shoot astro that much to justify paying a premium for an UWA fast prime).

As are their small primes. I'm just back from 3 weeks touring the minority ethnic tribes of Guizhou province and my most used lenses were the superb Sony 16-35/4 PZ, Tamron 70-180 (though the zoom unfortunately failed with a week to go) and ... a lens I bought on the spur of the moment just before I left, the Samyang 75/1.8 a super sharp and astonishingly good little lens. The Samyang 45/1.8 was used in occasion too (another tiny, super sharp, high performance lens).

Weather was not good in general so the 24/1.8 stayed in the bag. That is : no astro.

I have a lot of time for Samyang lenses. If this is lighter then the Tamron then I'm interested.

Maybe the Tamron will get a price cut as a result. A bit of competition never hurt

Are you implying the Tamron version is compact? I’d bet the Samyang lens will weigh less than the Tamron. Both the 135 and 85 weigh less than the Sony or Sigma equivalent.

If it's smaller and Lighter I am interested as well. I agree the 45 1.8 is a remarkable lens (very light and sharp). However I can not make up my mind on the 75. I shot into the sun with it and it lost a lot of contrast. Maybe I am being too harsh. I have considered the Sigma 90 2.8 as a replacement but. How was your experience witht he 75?

Ironic that now we have third parties copying other third parties. Used to be the first party manufacturers led the way with Tarmon and Sigma copying them. We've flipped that on its head now. Clearly Tamron's success is redefining the market. I wonder if Sony, Canon and Nikon will bring out their own 35-150's.

It worked just great for me around Guizhou - incredibly sharp, no major issues for anything I shot with it (portraits, street, nightscenes) and eye-AF was fast and very accurate.

Hope this IG link works - of these 8 portraits only 1 & 3 were with the Tamron 70-180, everything else with the SY 75.

I also used it for the images of the Sun & Moon Pagodas in Guilin (exposures ca. 2 mins 8 secs) whilst waiting for my flight home last night : https://www.instagram.com/p/CqFFvEay-lo/

I haven't yet used it for any landscape work as primarily I use the 16-35/PZ and Tamron 70-180 for that.

Anyone can produce a lens if they want. Perhaps Samyang looked at the good feedback for the Tamron and decided to give it go too. No need to pinch their optical design. They are pretty handy designing lenses.

If it renders similarly to the 135 1.8 it’ll be a great lens.

What makes the Tamron work for me despite it's size and weight is it's astounding IQ for a zoom lens with it's range. If Samyang can make a lens that can equal the quality in all areas and be smaller lighter and cheaper that would be quite something but I doubt they will be able to equal the Tamron in all respects
