DPR went downhill a long time ago after Phil left and the sale to Amazon. Way back in the day, it was THE place for camera reviews, before DSLRs were commonplace and high-end bridge cameras were still popular, like the old Coolpix 8800. Their news stories are often too late to be relevant, and their forums and comment sections are about 80% arguments between people who don't even own the gear in question. There used to be a handful of incredibly knowledgeable forum contributors there on some very specific technical topics and all of them left because it was just such an unpleasant place to participate. I have also seen forum moderators (who were picked from the regular poster pool) ban people for simply disagreeing with them, or pointing out misinformation.
The only thing I found useful on that website (in it's latest form) was the scene comparison tool, so I will miss that if it disappears.
I'm grateful FM is around as most people are civil, but what worries me is all the DPR trolls will need a new outlet now, and there are a LOT of them......Show more →
Yep, I really haven't seen DPR content of much value for a long time. Their reviews were very late and often didn't really cover what I cared about. Information from users on forums was typically more timely and detailed than DPR's formal reviews these days.
Chris and Jordan's videos are entertaining and of high quality - and this is coming from someone who tends to hate video reviews of things - so I have to imagine they will land someplace where they can continue to monetize said content.
I'll miss the scene comparison tool as well, but to be honest for a number of years I've mostly used it just to illustrate there really aren't any significant differences between sensors anymore (beyond their size and resolution of course).
The forums at DPR were of course a mixed bag. Indeed, most of the valuable contributors have been driven away over time in a lot of the forums (not all of them though, some of the non-brand related forums were still quite functional with excellent contributing members). The moderation was weak at best and the place is largely full of trolls. But you could usually get a quick and useful answer to a well stated question there.
It will be interesting to see where the user base migrates to. If they come here there will need to be some heavy moderation and bans I suspect. A lot of FM users are here because they gave up on DPR a long time ago and the forums have only gotten worse over time. But with care if FM can absorb the well behaved part of the DPR user base it will make FM a more active place. And really, as we all know 95% of the users are delightful people and it is the 5% or less of trolls that just need an IP ban that DPR moderators would rarely implement.
