one of the biggest failures with dpr forum structure was that it's not fluid web design on a pc, aka the window text width is fixed, it doesn't change to match the size of the browser window, you had to constantly scroll up and down: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/11482518/what-is-the-differenence-between-fixed-vs-fluid-vs-elastic-layout-vs-responsiv

at least three software engineers working for the company, and that's the best they could do?

fm is much better in that regard, there isn't any blank space on the sides of the text window.

I liked their flat view more on an image heavy thread or a reasonable discussion. Often threaded made it easier to avoid the tedious or toxic.

It's fine to use your AOL email (if it's not broken ...) as long as you don't use your AOL address to apply for important jobs, as it may give the employer the impression that you are a dinosaur!

Hi Gary ... No, I did not fall off the face of the earth even though Earth is round! Frankly, I have lost interest in shooting - not photography as a hobby but just going out to shoot. Meaning I am still active in photography - in photo competitions. I have not done any serious shooting for about 2 years now, and I am really only occasionally checking the Canon forum to see what's new in the Canon world. I am sorry I did not catch up with you while you were in town. Joshua did ask me. And quite honestly, I have little interest in shooting the peregrine falcons - I don't have the patience, as the falcon could be sitting on the branch literally for hours. I am more interested in shooting the red foxes and we were supposed to go last weekend but we called it off at the 11th hour because Joshua came down with a nose bleed. I prefer shooting during the week when it's less crowded but the weather has not been good. So hopefully this weekend ... or soon.

Good riddance. They were a bunch of blowhards there anyway. Dumped my forum membership last year after spending years there. Not going to be missed here.

That’s a pretty shortsighted view in my opinion, given that the site is most certainly not just the forums. I wasn’t a huge participant in the forums, but the reviews and articles comprise 25 years of photography history.

That history has little or no meaning for today's photography, today's cameras, lenses...it does have a historical value of course, but like computers, yesterday's info is ancient history...let it be gone...its info is not essential...

But for sociologists, it is a GOLD MINE into the warped thinking of humans...seriously.

I'd posted a link on a previous page, fortunately it's saved on Wayback Machine. They got a snapshot every day it seems or a lot anyway. Kinda fun to look at an old page and see the cameras people looked up etc. back in the mid 2000's

Hopefully we can get the info in the old bodies and comparisons. Looked up the d7000 and was able to compare it to canon bodies I'm more familiar with. Appreciate the history aspect of it.

The wayback machine will do an OK job saving a fair bit, but it doesn't archive the entire site, and very often galleries, interactive items and such that require a back end, etc, just don't work. I know there is work being done to fully archive the site, and it looks like that will happen, which is great, but it isn't the standard Wayback machine snapshot.

I wonder if DPReview somehow stays open. It is such a valuable and unique site, which makes it an asset. it makes no sense to simply throw away something with significant value and demand. Will a bidder come in and swoop it up? Will the owner rethink it given the outcry at the news of it closing? I guess I’ll believe it when I see it actually close down and become a mere archive.

I think about the risk, investment, and uncertainty that would go into an effort to create another site like that from scratch. And yet, this one already exists, and has a lot of clout, and a good reputation. Don’t be surprised if it managers to hold off this effort to kill it.

Don't shoot the messenger (me), but I've got to say it ... if you think the powers in charge at Amazon (owners of DPreview) have any kind of sympathy or compassion about DPreview, you're almost certainly to be disappointed at the end of this whole development. After all, the executives making the decision to shut down DPreview are responsible to the stock shareholders of Amazon, a publicly-traded company.

Whether someone or some entity comes along to rescue the "data" that's been compiled over many years is a separate issue (unless that's already happened which I don't know about). And I would not be surprised if that data will come at a price since Amazon could argue that it's their intellectual property. I am not a lawyer (thank God), but nothing surprises me anymore about this kind of stuff.

Interesting are you saying that the archive site is putting in extra time to get it to go in their archives or that it's happening elsewhere, some other way?

I looked at it just the other day after one guy had a D7000 thread. I hope that the comparisons in the reviews and the comparison tool are still available. Idk much about it but is think it's pretty easy to save the test photos and the code?

They weren't/aren't the only site doing photography reviews, and I for one never read many of their reviews, nor relied on them for any photographic decisions.

Anyway, we all have opinions. I presented mine as you present yours. I stand by my statement. Good riddance.
