p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · How likely do you think it is Sony does a new 100-400 GM2 soon?

Obviously no one knows for sure, but for those of you who've followed Sony's lens releases longer than I have care to take a guess?

I'd love to pull the trigger on the 100-400GM now, but it seems like Sony is busy lately revamping all their GM lens to be smaller and lighter. I kind of feel it might be worth waiting since weight is BIG deal for me, but maybe I've being overly cautious?

With the 20-70 F4 G I use now (happy to go to 100mm in APSC mode), it seems like the 100-400 would be the perfect way to cover all the focal range I need with only two lens.

Any newer alternatives to the 100-400 GM that I should also look at? Doesn't look like Tamron or Sigma really have anything that competes, but I'm sure I missed something. I'd love to stick with Sony as my experience with Tamron's AF has been pretty hit or miss.

Sigma has a smaller, lighter 100-400. Tamron has a 50-400 and a 150-500.

On the one hand it's almost as old as the original 70-200GM, so might be in line for an update based on that alone. On the other hand it is already a pretty modern lens with linear motors (plus SSM), is by no means heavy for its class (the old 70-200 was a boat anchor), and is probably a less popular lens than the 70-200/2.8 so it might be a few more years before an update appears. It's also still a damn good lens that easily keeps up with, and usually beats, the competition IMO.

The 85GM was released around the same time as the original 70-200 IIRC and that's yet to get its update, so these schedules are not set in stone. And while the new 70-200 is considerably lighter than the old one, it's no smaller and I'd not expect the new 85GM to be any smaller than the old one, either (perhaps even bigger and heavier if it's f/1.2), nor the 100-400, so shrinkage is by no means guaranteed with an update.

My guess? An update in 2024.

Probably close to zero. It is a great performer and not a compromise lens. Its release was newer than the ones being re-done.

I hope that Sony would put their design energy elsewhere…. Like on a 100/1.4 or 200/2 or a good 300/2.8… or 28/1.4.

I owned both GM and Sigma at same time and kept Sigma. My Sigma copy was equally good or even better than GM between 100-300, GM surpassed at 300-400.

GM was way too heavy, bulky and being a white lens attracted unwanted attention.

Sigms is as light as my 70-200 GM II.

Sony 100-400 GM II will be mostly about weight reduction if anything. Nothing wrong with the lens, its just too damn heavy.

I love heavier lenses to help with my shaky hands but to an extent.

Sony has announced development of a 300mm f/2.8

I think we're still a ways away; as there is no lens in that class that beats the 100-400GM (yet). The Nikon 100-400, Canon 100-500, Tamron 50-400, and Sigma 100-400 and 60-600 are all good, but none of them are outright better.

I do think it will get an update, as its a popular lens, but I think we are looking at late 2024 at the very earliest.

They have created two mark II GMs to replace early lenses that did not meet the GM vision. That's all. Yes, there has been noise from a few about wanting Sony to replace this and that, but it's just noise.

The 100-400 already meets the GM vision, as far as I can tell. I don't think you need to worry about its imminent replacement.

What about an upgrade to the 200-600 G? The lens is very good and widely popular, but could Sony make an upgraded (lighter, smaller, faster) GM version? Would it be worth it? I feel like there is a lot of consumer room between the current telephoto options and the 400/600 primes.

Just back from an amazing Safari, Serengeti and Ngorogoro, Used the 100-400 GM with X 1.4 an X 2, converters.

Will see soon if pictures work, Black Rhinos at about 800M, with X2 don't give images on the viewfinder or camera viewer that give assurance. Just hope I got worthwhile images with A9.

Use with TCs is a GM strength for Sony.

Shooting through 800m of heat haze, the X2 may well be the least of your problems.

For photography the 1.4 works very well on the 400GM, 600GM and 70-200GM. On the 100-400GM and the 200-600GM, there is some benefit in details, but due to the loss of contrast and the increased color fringing, it's barely worth the hassle (compared to cropping). The X2 is even more demanding on the lens. Of course with low resolution bodies or for video the TCs work much better as the low resolution hides their weaknesses.

I have only 100-400 GM and 200-600 G. I think with A9 1.4x TC is very useful with these lenses. It is different with high rez cameras - I also favor cropping then. I also think the quality drop with TC is much higher as focus distance gets longer. When shooting small birds at less than 10m, TC is fine.

I've had my Sony 100-400 for 2.5 years now. It has proved its worth many times over. And I chose the Sony over the Sigma based on reviews. And based on the fact I shot the Tamron 100-400 when I shot Nikon DSLR and wasn't happy with the photos or lens performance.

What I would like to see from a new version is internal zoom like the 200-600.

Now there has been nothing on the rumor sites, not even a "wild rumor". Which SAR is mostly wrong about anyway. Maybe Sony will have a surprise announcement of a revamped 100-400.

The Nikon Z is far better with shorter throw and much less specular messiness in the bokeh, especially in the foreground. The Sony needs an update badly.

The Sony is a good lens if you need the range. It packs well and people saying it’s heavy are nuts. It’s a good value for what it provides, but in no way is it an industry leading optic.

Lighter, smaller and faster? It would surely have to defy the laws of physics to be all three! What I’d prefer is a new 100-400 GM with built in 1.4x TC, which would then effectively replace two big zooms.

Thanks everyone for the info and recommendations. For my needs it looks like the Sigma 100-400 will be good enough, and considering it's only $820 on Amazon right now makes it almost a no brainer. At that price I can resell for not a huge loss if I ever decide to upgrade to the Sony 100-400 (current GM or future version).

I think you will be very pleased with the Sigma. From the Phillip Reeve site:

"Recommendation: this (the Sigma) lens is optically so good that image quality shouldn’t be a deciding factor between it and the Sony FE 4.5-5.6/100-400 GM OSS. The build quality is not up to professional standards, still this is the best long telephoto option for everybody on a budget who can get along with the slower maximum aperture."
