p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · humidity and cameras & lenses

I created a post in the Trip forum but perhaps one of the questions would have been better served if it had been posted here. That post is at https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1800610 , but I will post the one gear question here.

Situation: I am leaving for Costa Rica (Osa Peninsula) in 2 days. The humidity in that region at this time of year is about 70%.

Gear in question: R5, 7DM2, EF 100-400L II, EF 24-105L, EF 100L macro, EF 1.4x III TC

Question: I will be in this environment (70% humidity) for nine days. Do I need to worry about that humidity causing mould inside my cameras and lenses? Do I need to bag my cameras and lenses in zip locks with silica packs each night?

Thanks

I've used this rechargeable silica gel dehumidifer in Ecuador and Costa Rica rainforests. I plugged it in during the day and left it in the camera bag each night. I'm not sure where you are going in CR, but laguna de larageta is like 110% humidity.

Shouldnt be a problem for less than 2 weeks. Greater than 2 months then get an electronic dry box.

Fungus isn't, but condensation can be.

How close to the ocean? I'm not too concerned with humidity here in summer, but the Gulf Coast is a different animal. If the ocean temperature isn't too high California coast isn't a big concern imo.

Are you staying in temperature controlled lodging?

Going to warm air if the camera has been in AC can really cause problems if the condensation won't dry because it's warm and humid. AC dries out the air too though so you'd dry the gear every night.

Not quite sleeping on the ground at the sirena ranger station but close. Definitely not indoor with AC!

I'd be more worried about vaccine requirements for Costa Rica https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/traveler/none/costa-rica

I have lived in a hot/humid environment for over 40 years. Yes, bag them with silica gel packs. The issue you will have will be leaving your hotel room with cold AC into the humid outdoors.
