Any theories about what would cause the horizontal banding you see here in the smoke pattern?

Sony a1 (ILCE-1)
Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II with SEL TC 1.4x
ISO: 2500,
Aperture: 4
Electronic Shutter: 1/16,000
Natural sunlight

Is it related to way the data is written to the sensor?
Is it related to me using the electronic shutter?
Maybe the smoke appears and disappears so quickly the sensor writing isn't complete.

Your thoughts?

Is it possible that the muzzle flash was so fast that the camera "saw" it as a flicker of light similar to LED flicker? Usually banding is caused by inconsistent light sources.

I've seen this before on bullet captures, when the object moves close to the shutter speed you will get these gaps in readout.

The lines in the smoke are all horizontal so it's the sensor readout. The grooves near the muzzle are slightly curved which are the grooves carved into the bullet for the barrel.

I think you can just use a Gaussian blur on the smoke and it will clean it up nicely.

The eshutter reads the sensor in horizontal blocks of pixels or lines. I think 9 or 18 lines at a time? Someone here will know the real answer. When things are moving really fast, this banding in blocks can show up on eshutter.

On the A9 this could cause hummingbird wings to look similar to the gunsmoke. Noise reduction software often helped smooth it out on the A9. The A1 sensor is faster and doesn’t show it for hummingbird wings. I imagine gunsmoke is moving even faster than hummingbird wings.

Yes, I am wondering if the short duration muzzle blast is essentially acting as a flash with a really weird intensity curve. This is definitely a sync and e-shutter readout issue.

@DaveBurbank Did you try using mech shutter? How are you triggering the shutter?

It almost appears that the LED light mounted under the pistol is on, too? They flicker at very high rates.
