The Fuji X-100 series cameras are outstanding! My last one was an X-100F and I wish I still had it.

Saw you video and was surprised to learn you were wow with Fuji x-100 V especially when you were mainly a Canon shooter. Are you still in Hawaii?

I thought about getting one, but even with the tiny X100 I would still carry it in a camera bag anyways. It will go in my Peak Design 6L sling, along with my wallet, keys, and cell phone. So If I'm gonna put it in a small bag anyways, I'd rather carry a XT3 with the 27mm pancake. I find the 23m a little too wide for general outdoor use, and for indoors I'd rather have it little wider and brighter. My solution is a XT3 with 27mm, and a 18mm 1.4 in the 6L sling. I can swap the 27mm 18mm when I'm indoor and have something a lot better than what the X100 can do indoors with a 23mm F2 lens. All for about the same price as what a X100V goes for these days.

A few years back I had a chance to shoot with the previous version, the X100f. I liked the camera a lot — for the tight, compact form factor and the interface, and because it was reminiscent of old-school film rangefinder cameras I used many years ago. It also performed admirably.

I was pretty sold on the concept and I thought about getting one — or later on getting the X100v.

But every time I would get close to an actual purchase, the use case for the camera seemed less compelling than the "heart case" for it.

I already had the XPro2. I wasn't going to give up the advantages of lens choice that the interchangeable lens camera provides, so the X100v would end up being my second body, complimenting the XPro. But when I attach the lens I most often have on the XPro, the 27mm f/2.8, it isn't that much larger than the X100v — not enough to spend the extra money on the additional body.

I could — and did! — tell myself there were situations in which the smaller package of the X100v would be useful. However, the XE4 provides more flexibility than the X100v. It doesn't have the same cachet as the oh-so-cool X100v, but fitted with the 27mm f/2.8 it is smaller and lighter (by a very small amount) and it can be used with other lenses.

So, in the end, it seems to me that the X100v is a lovely little camera, and something that could be a solution for those who are fine with a single 23mm fixed focal length, but that for most of us its utility will be limited. That's unfortunate, since I like it on a subjective basis quite a bit.

And, "Best Camera Ever Made?" Really? It is a fine, nice, appealing camera, for sure. But...?

People on social media like to make hyperbolistic statements to drive views, and thus revenue for their business (ads, presets, workshops, etc). With such hyperbole it can be hard to distinguish the truth.

The X100V is not the best camera ever made nor the most technologically advanced camera, nor are the film simulations "mind blowing". I think what the OP likes is that the cameras can output really pleasing JPGs without having to do much editing. It's simple to use, evokes a bygone way of shooting (I don't like the word "authentic" thrown around describe anything remotely pleasing), and most important to some people, it's impossible for other people to buy it right now We all like to own something that other people can't get their hands on.

Spend a year with it and let me know if you think it's the best camera ever made.

Pretty much.

That last point — "spend a year and get back to us..." — is also on my mind when I see the latest "Best Camera EVER" post on social media. I suspect that some other thing may be described in such terms by our OP by then. ;-)

The truth? From my point of view, the X100v is a really excellent, really interesting camera that appeals to me... but its real-world usability is quite limited. I write that as a person who is often happy to work with a camera using only a single prime in roughly its focal length range for some photography... but who recognizes that this is certainly not what most people will be happy with.

For my part — and I recognize that I'm engaging in Fujifilm blasphemy now — the whole "great jpgs" thing doesn't float my boat. I want great raw files — which I get from the system — that I can push and pull in any direction in post to achieve my vision for the images.

Again, I think the X100v is a really cool camera. I'm impressed by it. It could be the ideal cameras for a few photographers. I just don't think it is ideal for that many photographers, much less that it is the best camera ever.

A X100s saved my photographic bacon while on vacation a couple years back. I had stumbled on a stone path and damaged my primary, a X-T20, to the point it would no longer function reliably. A buddy had loaned me his X100s, which I took along as a backup. Originally I found the focal length limiting, but quickly learned how to go wider by doing panoramas.

While it more than acquited itself, I ended up with a X-H1, sourced here, as my replacement primary. Later on my friend gifted me the X100s, which I still carry as a security blanket.

We're getting to the point where it _might_ be a decent strategy to wait for a 40MP update from Fujifilm — it is virtually certain that it will be coming, and I think that it might come to the X100v replacement before it comes to other remaining cameras in the line-up.

At that point, if you can wait, you'll have more interesting choices. You could go with what is likely to be an improved version of the model. Or you will find that your aren't convinced by the new model's features and that the old one becomes more available and less expensive.

If you need one right now, though, I don't have much to offer you.

Yeah, I hear you and I saw that Fuji is hosting an event in April. But I guess my worry is that even with new models, they won’t be able to keep up with demand and it’ll just be the same a year from now. But who knows.

I'm liking the X-T5 more and more. I think it is the best camera made yet for my wants and really enjoy using it. My Sony A7III still outdoes it slightly in some situations for IQ and AF, but overall there are much more things that I would like Sony to change than Fuji.

Glad I got mine when I did. Found a mint condition used one with under 500 clicks for $1,000 at my local camera store in January of '21.

If anything, the event in April might be an announcement that Fuji is ramping up production of x100v.

I wouldn’t wait for a 40mp model. They can’t even meet demand on the current model. If you need it now you may have to buy it used, wait for stock to open up, or pay way over MSRP for a grey market model.

They aren't particularly hard to source per my method in the other X100 thread.

This thread (and a 48 hour review) almost feels like it was posted as clickbait by a one and done poster looking for a few YT views, doesn't it?

April is next month. If waiting at all is an option, that's not long to wait to see if there is more information that might inform a purchase decision.

In general, when the "should I wait or should I leap" question comes up, my answer is more or less that if you really _need_ the camera right now (e.g. you have no camera, your camera is broken, or what you have is literally incapable of doing the photography you need right now and serious consequences will ensue) then it makes sense to get something now rather than waiting. On the other hand, if you have a reasonably functional camera and/or if the consequences of holding off a while aren't a big deal and an announcement of a new model seems imminent, then it can make sense to hold off a bit so that you at least know what your options are.

Also, there are two possible "traps" to watch for when considering new gear. One is the gear-lust-driven urgency to get The New Thing Now, but the other is the risk of waiting forever for The Perfect Thing That Never Comes out of fear that Something Better May Come. ;-)

I’m curious about your method (searched through your posts on my phone). I’ve paid for a HotStock notification, refresh the Leica (for the Q) and Fuji gear sell boards here and B&H’s listing 10+ times every hour for the past three days since I started searching, search on eBay/MPB/KEH…still can’t find any selling offers that are reasonable for either camera model.

Sure, I just strongly doubt that the April announcement is going to reveal a 40mp X100 model. That wouldn't make a lot of sense given that, like I said, Fuji already has trouble fulfilling demand for the 26 mp model -- and since the shortage doesn't appear to be related to the sensor, I don't see how a 40mp model would be in any greater supply than the current 26 mp model.

So if there is any announcement about the X100 in particular, it's probably going to be an update on the supply... but even if Fuji increases supply substantially, we don't know how much pent up demand there is, and thus how quickly the shortage will be cleared.

Everyone has their own timeline for what qualifies as "must have immediately". If you need the camera in the next few weeks, your options are limited.

You (or I) might end up being right/wrong about the announcement and what will happen with the X100v or its successor. Who knows? So I can't really disagree with you on most of that thought.

(I do think that it is virtually certain that there will be a next-generation follow-up to the X100v that uses the new sensor, which is likely to be in the almost the entire line-up in the next year or so. I have reasons for thinking so, but no proof...)

I just wanted to point out that a decision to wait or not wait isn't a black and white thing, and that circumstances will make a difference to each person. For my part, if I were considering a X100v right now — and I didn't literally "need" it immediately — I'd at least wait for next month's announcement and see if that affects my choice. And if a new 40MP (or non-40MP) version is announced, I'd think that the brief wait was worth it. Imagine a few possibilities:

1. A 40MP version with other improvements is announced for upcoming delivery. If that sounds good... glad you waited!

2. A 26MP version with other improvements is announced for upcoming delivery. If that sounds good, glad you waited!

3. A 26MP version with other improvement is announced for upcoming delivery. That doesn't sound significantly better than the current camera, but as interest shifts to the newer version the prices on the old one, new or used, go down and you pounce. Glad you waited!

4. Nothing of interest is announced. As long as a wait of a few weeks didn't interfere significantly with your photography, that's good to know. Not "glad you waited," but not a big problem.

YMMV.
