I thought about getting one, but even with the tiny X100 I would still carry it in a camera bag anyways. It will go in my Peak Design 6L sling, along with my wallet, keys, and cell phone. So If I'm gonna put it in a small bag anyways, I'd rather carry a XT3 with the 27mm pancake. I find the 23m a little too wide for general outdoor use, and for indoors I'd rather have it little wider and brighter. My solution is a XT3 with 27mm, and a 18mm 1.4 in the 6L sling. I can swap the 27mm 18mm when I'm indoor and have something a lot better than what the X100 can do indoors with a 23mm F2 lens. All for about the same price as what a X100V goes for these days. ...Show more →
A few years back I had a chance to shoot with the previous version, the X100f. I liked the camera a lot — for the tight, compact form factor and the interface, and because it was reminiscent of old-school film rangefinder cameras I used many years ago. It also performed admirably.
I was pretty sold on the concept and I thought about getting one — or later on getting the X100v.
But every time I would get close to an actual purchase, the use case for the camera seemed less compelling than the "heart case" for it.
I already had the XPro2. I wasn't going to give up the advantages of lens choice that the interchangeable lens camera provides, so the X100v would end up being my second body, complimenting the XPro. But when I attach the lens I most often have on the XPro, the 27mm f/2.8, it isn't that much larger than the X100v — not enough to spend the extra money on the additional body.
I could — and did! — tell myself there were situations in which the smaller package of the X100v would be useful. However, the XE4 provides more flexibility than the X100v. It doesn't have the same cachet as the oh-so-cool X100v, but fitted with the 27mm f/2.8 it is smaller and lighter (by a very small amount) and it can be used with other lenses.
So, in the end, it seems to me that the X100v is a lovely little camera, and something that could be a solution for those who are fine with a single 23mm fixed focal length, but that for most of us its utility will be limited. That's unfortunate, since I like it on a subjective basis quite a bit.
And, "Best Camera Ever Made?" Really? It is a fine, nice, appealing camera, for sure. But...?
