A few more taken with my original 5D.

Ok I'm sorry I know that's a lot more than a few.

I haven't posted anything in a LONG time but in general most of the bodies I use fit this theme. Once Covid hit the events I would attend ended & many have never come back to life for various reasons and on top of that my wife was a care giver to her mother who just recently passed away just 4 weeks shy of her 96th birthday. These photos are from Saturday's R/C Jet Club annual picnic which was well attended and started out in great light that faded as the humidity crept up throughout the afternoon. I had decided to put my old 1D2n to use with my rarely used 70-200 f2.8 L IS ver2 for flight line use to see how it would do. It was intended to be as back up to my 7D2 & 35-350 L but I didn't shoot a single photo with it. The old 1D2n was working so well I used it or my 1D4 & 100-400 L IS ver 2 for all the flying.
These photos are from the 1D2n & 70-200 hand held shooting in Tv mode using SS of 1/1600 or 1/2000

That's in the downtown Baltimore harbor area. It was the old Powerplant from the early 1900's converted for business use.

Moonrise Over Tantalus | Honolulu, Hawaii | Volcanic haze from the Big Island (Hawaii) results in strange misty blue landscapes. ISO 2500 is pretty dad burn horrid on the old 70D but I processed it with Lightroom's new Denoise AI and it cleaned up well, albeit deep shadows look a bit melted | EOS 70D and EF 70-200 4.0L IS USM

GREAT thread!

can we agree: the posted images are generally noisier and less sharp.

BUT in no way does that lessen the appeal of these images.

there are MANY stunning images on this thread.

as someone who still occasionally uses the 5D which i bought for $100 since it has a scratch on the sensor (that can only be noticed at f8 and smaller!), i am thrilled that these older Canon bodies have passed the test of time.

my question is: who would now/today pull out their older Canon body and get to work?

(I know Daniel Scott would!)

thumbs up.

Because most people are drawn to the subject, which in a good photo is more important than sharpness and a lack of noise.

Not me. Why would I use an older model when I can shoot the same subject and get far better results in many aspects?

imagemaster-

"better" results or better in some ways results?

i am suggesting that the older DSLR bodies lack of sharpness and even noise occasionally add to the image.

i concede that the newer mirrorless bodies have much better autofocus and frame rates which assist in catching a moment, a movement.

but in many other situations, the older DSLRs still produce really good images.

so when i need eye autofocus, i will not be pulling out my 5D or 6D or Nikon D750.

but all of those bodies with the right lens pairing and me getting lucky on a given day can still make nice images.

i'm just saying.

lucky us that we have access to such fantastic tools.

thumbs up.

"Better" in that it appeals more to people when it is the same subject, but sharper and with less noise.

Maybe the odd image, but not for most images

WOW!

that second image of the squawking bird photographed on a Canon 20D is (still!) very impressive.

thumbs up.

To be perfectly honest... I wouldn't. After upgrading to the 5D MKIII and now having had over a year to get used to it, I would never choose to go back to the original especially in any sort of professional context. The main reasons would be the battery life, the faster write time to memory cards, and the auto focus system which has breathed new life into some of my older lenses (in particular, my EF 85mm f/1.8 which had been mostly shelved over the last year until recent months). In addition to those reasons, to me the images look the same in terms of color rendering, so I think choosing to work with the original 5D instead of the MKIII would be like choosing to take away better features that make my job so much easier and enjoyable for no apparent good reason. If I were to really look for an advantage to going back to the original 5D, the only ones I could think of is for the smaller file sizes which don't fill up my hard drives as quickly, and I could see a small benefit to the slower write speed to the memory cards which in the past would force me to slow down and be a little more deliberate with pressing the shutter release, however that also caused me to miss many great shots in the past when using the original 5D, which is a disadvantage that outweighs the advantage in my opinion.

Don't get me wrong, I love the original Canon 5D for many reasons, but I think the MKIII improves on every aspect of that camera without sacrificing the soul that the original had. I'll always keep the original for sentimental reasons, but would only ever pick it up again if forced.

I can’t tell you how refreshing your post was to read
I too have the 5diii (and 6d) and I absolutely love them. The silent shutter on my 186K 5diii is utterly sublime. It makes the most beautiful soft sound I’ve ever heard on a dslr. The downside for me is the weight of the body hence the 6d steps in if I’m not quite feeling energetic enough.
I had a desire to move onto the 5div sometime ago, but I’ve decided that when my 5diii dies I’ll consider it more closely.

I also really love the sound and feel of the 5D III shutter. It's very smooth and satisfying, especially in comparison to the choppy and clunky mechanical feel and sound of the original 5D. Funnily enough I think the 5D III would still be considered an "old school" DSLR by this thread's standards, but to me it still feels brand new in comparison, and I hope to get several more years of use before looking for another upgrade.

Koi Ahoy! | Ala Moana Center | Honolulu HI | EOS SL1 & EF-s 24 2.8 STM

The shutter on the Rebel SL1 sounded like I was squeezing a crackerjack box but the pics came out fine. Dad burn camera was as small as a typical mirrorless camera but with an optical VF.

The below shot was taken on arrival day for the 2010 Abbotsford Airshow I spent hours removing the power lines so I could print the image to take the show to get the crew to sign it. They loved the shot and gave me a bunch of swag and access to the flight deck!!

Today using the new remove tool in PS I was able to remove the power lines in 2 mins
